I'm overwhelmed by how nice everyone is.
Many thanks for all of your input.
Arlene: I have considered eliminating soy from my diet and have already started but as Tex so wisely pointed out, I believe I'm going to hold off on practicing eliminating soy and dairy/casein until after I submit the Enterolab testing. I've suffered this long so I may as well continue the suffering another few weeks if it means accurate results. I am going to continue avoiding all glutens however because I'm feeling slightly better since I've started. In the meantime I'm going to continue to try to educate myself on the hidden glutens, soys and caseins. It is so overwhelming reading all these labels and understanding what they all mean.
As an example, I had a horrible day yesterday and took a look at EVERYTHING I put in my mouth and started thinking about the gum I've been chewing and bingo- it has gluten in it...along with a bunch of artificial sweeteners. This is going to be a long learning curve I'm afraid.
Polly: I have also stopped all supplements because until I'm clear on what is in them, I don't want to ingest them. With the way everything runs right through me, I'm questioning their benefits at this point anyway.
MaryBeth: Thanks for your words of wisdom. I'm starting with the Enterolab but once I see what that shows I may want to consider MRT. I'm trying not to get to overwhelmed by everything and just take it one step at a time. It appears you are in the "know" on this subject and I may need some advice at some point.
Kari: You are so right when you said how the collective knowledge here is worth its weight in gold! It's so very comforting knowing that there are answers to questions right here that the medical field hasn't quite figured out or has accepted yet. I was given the option of radio iodine treatment for the Grave's on my first appt with the endocrinologist. I thought it seemed a bit extreme to "kill" my thyroid without pursuing other options first. I sometimes wonder if all of these autoimmune diseases are interrelated.
Tex: As I have already mentioned above, I'm not going to worry about eliminating dairy and soy right now until after the testing so the results are accurate. Additionally I have discontinued all supplements until after the testing and won't resume any until I am sure they are all free of gluten, soy and casein. I'm also going to discontinue the coconut oil until after testing although I have already seen some benefits since adding it to my diet. I'm doing everything I can to make sure the test results will be as accurate as possible. Your suggestions are so much appreciated and needed.
Sharon: Thanks for the welcome. I hope you find some healing after 15 years of suffering!
Martha: Thanks for your input on insurance reimbursement and I'm glad to hear you are controlling your MC with diet alone. It gives me hope. So glad you are feeling better.
I've got so much more to learn so I better get back to reading more posts but before I do, I'm off to eat my brown rice and organic ground beef mix that has been sustaining me for the last few weeks...bon appetit!

G'day from Australia
this place is amazing, in my life i have never seen a group of such wonderful people in the one place.
I am another using diet as the main managment tool, it took me about 6 months to find my triggers and eliminate them from world (Gluten, Yeast, Dairy and Soy)
12 months later i am reasonably well, symptoms only occur if i get stressed or eat something that contains a trigger. I have travelled for work (domestically and overseas), in this time i have also attained promotions with my career.
To clarify the statement 'you will get your life back' i think the true interpretation of this is that once you figure out your MC management requirements you will live a great life with minimal symptoms, it wont be exactly what it was pre MC, there will be changes.
some more hints for hidden items....
lots of lipsticks and lip balms have gluten and loads of soy, some dried herb mixes have gluten in them...
over time you will become a label detective!
there are some great lists on this site that has all the names that each of the items will appear as on food labels etc
Yes Gluten free products do cost more but it is a small price to pay to make sure you are getting a trusted product.
good luck for your MC journey! We are all here to share your good days and your less then ideal ones!

FYI, Mary Beth is a licensed dietitian, so yes, she knows her stuff.Kelly wrote:It appears you are in the "know" on this subject and I may need some advice at some point.
Polly, as you may remember from the old board, is an MD, and she is probably the first person here to discover that the symptoms of MC can be controlled by diet alone. She is also the first person here, (and probably the first person in the world, for that matter), to attain histological normalcy, by treating the symptoms of MC by diet alone, and proving it by means of "clean" biopsy samples taken during a colonoscopy exam.
Out in the cold, cruel world, (IOW, away from this discussion board), precious few doctors and dietitians have a tenth of the knowledge about this disease that Polly and Mary Beth have, so we're extremely fortunate that they're willing to share their time, their experiences, and their valuable insight with us.
Tex
It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Dear Kelly
Welcome from Asia! I cannot add much to the advice you have already got.
Best wishes on your journey with us back to remission. ant

That reminded me of the ice creams I eat just before sending my sample into Enterolabs. I sort of knew it would be the last time. But now I do not miss them.I believe I'm going to hold off on practicing eliminating soy and dairy/casein until after I submit the Enterolab testing

I couldn't agree more Gabe! Glad to hear you are doing well managing your MC with diet. Congrats on the promotions. It has to be difficult traveling with so many dietary restrictions. Thanks for the hints and the boost of confidence. I hope this finds you safe and out of harm's way with that scary cyclone headed your way. Be safe.this place is amazing, in my life i have never seen a group of such wonderful people in the one place.
Tex, I wasn't aware of Mary Beth or Polly's credentials but I'm not surprised. The intelligence level of this forum is A-mazing and coupled with such compassion and understanding too. I do feel so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to learn and heal from all of your experiences and knowledge.FYI, Mary Beth is a licensed dietitian, so yes, she knows her stuff.

I need to get me a prescription pad so I can write a prescription for my GI. One solid month of reading on this board, every day. In fact, QID (4 times daily, as written on a prescription. LOL!)
Good idea Arlene! Mainstream medicine has so much to learn.
Thanks Ant. I've been avoiding ice cream simply because of the empty calories but I may just have some tonight.Welcome from Asia!

I will second Granny H and welcome back home. Been a while but we all know that this disease takes some different paths for all of us.
So nice seeing you again but not for the reason you had to seek us out again.
Love, Maggie
