Proof of noncoeliac gluten intolerance

Post by Bifcus16 »

From my local paper.

They have done a study showing gluten intolerant people react to gluten (duh!). It matters because there aren't a lot of studies that clearly show people react to gluten without being coeliac.

The bakery they talk about is very popular here. I even know of gluten eaters who make an effort to get their bread. Mostly contains yeast and soy, though.

Thanks for posting Lyn,

Generally, as you say, good news that it is becoming a little bit more accepted by a "conservative" medical world. But I have to react to this.......
Although it was safe to use gluten to test people who suspected they might have an intolerance, it could hurt people with coeliac disease.
Nonsense. It is not safe for anyone with an inflammation caused by gluten to consume the toxin.

This is great news and another study for me to print out and bring with me to my next appointment with the GI.

It was a shame that they didn't say what medical problems the group they tested had.

In any case, it doesn't matter to me, gluten free has worked so far! I'm so grateful to have found this group!

Arlene,

This phrase sort of implies what some of their symptoms were:
Nearly 70 per cent of the volunteers who ate the gluten said their symptoms were not adequately controlled and reported pain, bloating, problems going to the toilet and extreme tiredness.
The only question I have is, "Was it, (or will it be), published in any medical journal?" There's no mention of that, that I can see in the article. If not, they're in the same boat as Dr. Fine. :sigh:

Thanks for the link.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Good news, it's been published. Here's a link.

CONCLUSIONS: "Non-celiac gluten intolerance" may exist, but no clues to the mechanism were elucidated.Am J Gastroenterol advance online publication, 11 January 2011; doi:10.1038/ajg.2010.487.
Well at least that is a sort of official move out of the "denial" stage
