Processed Foods And ADHD

Post by tex »

Hi All,

If processed foods are so harmful to kids with ADHD, how good could they be for anyone?
When children between the ages of 4 and 8 were placed on a diet containing no processed foods for five weeks, ADHD symptoms diminished in 78 percent of them. And, when suspected trouble foods were reintroduced into the diet, two-thirds of the children experienced a relapse in symptoms.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

My 12yo, Sierra, climbed out of her crib when she was 15 months old. By the time she was 3-1/2, she was such a terror that in private we called her Sierra bin Laden. My mother died in Jan. 2002, and on the plane home I was sitting next to a woman who was reading a pamphlet about how diet helps ADHD. When she settled down for a nap, I asked her if I could read it.

It totally overwhelmed me with all the information about additives and artificial flavors, etc., that ADHD kids react to, and how to help them, but what I decided to do was to take all additives, artificial colors and flavors, and all sugar out of Sierra's diet. Within just a short while, she was a sunny, delightful child.

My husband was quite skeptical that the diet changes had made a difference. Several weeks later, he took her to an event where she consumed a hot dog, potato chips, and soda. Starting within a few hours and lasting for more than a day, Sierra bin Laden was back.

Thanks for posting this article, Tex. Sierra has grown into a sweet, loving child, but as I mentioned in another thread, she is very frustrated by how hard it is to force herself to focus. We don't eat much processed food, but since my husband has agreed to make our home gluten-free to see if it helps with her ADHD, I will also be looking at food additives we may be consuming.

When all of our kids were little, my friend had a boy that was super hyper & somewhat ADHD. She put him on that diet & you wouldn't have believed the change in him. It was day & night. I stay away from food colorings myself, just don't think they're a good thing & have always cooked mostly from scratch until my husband died. Now that's been a bit harder, but here I am again, trying to do it.
