Think Sunscreen Protects Against Skin Cancer? - Think Again

Post by tex »

Unfortunately, it apparently provides very little benefit, if any.
The author of the Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics piece cites a randomised study in which individuals used daily sunscreen or no daily sunscreen for 4.5 years.
The result was that the development of new cancers was essentially the same in both groups. In other words, the application of sunscreen did not appear to protect against the development of new skin cancers.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I stay out of the sun because I hate the smell of sunblock and because an uncle was dying of melanoma when a heart attack took him, and my father has had melanoma in one eye. I can sunburn in the shade of a tree near a body of water just from the reflected rays anyway.

When I was a kid, before sunblock, my mother clothed me in long sleeves and a hat. I guess that is probably still the best solution.
