Newbie:
I am new to this forum, and was just diagnosed today.
I am starting on my fourth month of suffering, and my doctor wants me to try Entocort.
I have been on Several Medicines and am not optomistic at this point.
I am so glad to have hopefully found others that know how I feel. It is so hard to explain to my family and friends what I am going through when to them I look fine on the outside.

Welcome to the site and please stick around long enough to learn that you are not alone and what has helped a lot of us including entocort and diet.
I would not be afraid of taking Entocort but would encourage you to stay on it long enough to give yourself a chance to heal. A lot of doctors thing a short term is all that is needed but experience here has shown you should give it at least 6 months. Also, altering your diet could be quite helpful.
Don't give up. There are more and more of us every day.

Carla! So glad you found us, although I'm sorry you have MC.
I agree with Shirley--the Entocort gives you a good boost toward healing. Diet is really important. Most of us find that we are sensitive to gluten, dairy and soy, and some are sensitive to more things. I'd really encourage you to eliminate gluten from your diet, and dairy and soy too. But gluten is the most important.

Hi Carla,
Welcome to the board. This disease is not easy to treat effectively, but Entocort is probably the most effective "safe" medication that is prescribed for it. For most people, it is as effective as prednisone, but it has a much lower risk of side effects, because it is encapsulated, so that it does not become activated until it has passed into the lower third of the small intestine and the colon. That means that only about 10 to 15% of it is absorbed into the bloodstream, so the risk of side effects is also reduced accordingly. Entocort can help to suppress the inflammation that causes microscopic colitis, but unfortuantely, it cannot prevent it from developing in the first place. As Shirley and Martha mentioned, in order to prevent the inflammation from developing in the first place, we have to remove certain foods from our diets, because when this disease is triggered, a sensitivity to certain foods is also triggered, for many of us. If we stop eating all of the foods to which we are sensitive, (including trace amounts), and give our intestines time to heal, our symptoms will go away, and we can get our life back. This disease cannot be cured, but the symptoms can certainly be controlled.
Please be aware that most GI specialists will argue that diet has nothing to do with this disease, but that closed-minded attitude is why they have such a poor record of success for treating this disease, while we have a much higher success rate.
Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hello Carla, welcome here, I agree with others, give entocort a try and also read as much as you can here, especially on the diet part and give that a try too. It's not easy disease and quick fixes do not exits, but a lot were able to achieve remission and get their live back on track, so there is hope!!
Take a look around and read as much as possible and feel free to ask ask ask as much as you want.

WELCOME, CARLA!!
I'm presently taking Entocort, and I consider it to be a miracle drug. It has given me my life back. I don't have any side effects from it, though some here have. In addition, I have eliminated foods that have caused me intestinal distress.
I recommend that you begin keeping a "Winning the Poo" diary, writing down everything you have eaten and also the types and quantities of BMs you have each day. You should eventually begin to see a pattern and be able to eliminate foods that seem problematic.

You've gotten some really sound advise. Diet is key.
I know what you mean about others not understanding. As someone else said, just remind them that your doctor prescribed steroids for your illness. They may just take notice.
I hope you get some success from the medication you're trying.

Dear Carla
Just wanted to say Hi from Hong Kong. I too am on Entocort and it with diet has helped me get my life back. Keep reading here. Many of us have done the Enterolab tests that help pinpoint some of our intolerances.
Best wishes on your journey to remission, ant
