WOW, Pat that is a long time.....

I found the PP on a Friday and by Monday I was Gluten Free! I couldn't believe the PP had the answer and no one else did, especially the big well known hospitals/doctors.

Joan,

To clarify things I didn't just blatantly ignore their expertise. I did try gluten free and dairy free ( I was already dairy free) but I have so many, many intolerances that it didn't seem to help and I ended up crashing and then the 3rd GI doc gave me Neomycin because HE decided that Xifaxin was too expensive to just try. I had never heard of the breath tests at that time. So I took the Neo and after that I've never really been the same. Imodium wouldn't work until 3 years later. I was so sick I lost about 9 or 10 lbs and I only weigh 104. Had the breath tests after that ( recommended by my dietician at the time). The 3rd GI lied and said he had offered them to me but I didn't want to drive and hour away to do it! That's another story. Anyway, I was neg on Lactose, pos on Fructose and neg on SIBO, actually the SIBO test was done by GI #4. So no more antibiotics for me!!!!!! I'll have to be on my death bed before I take them again. There was another poster on here, Wayne, I think. Not Tex. I warned him and he took it anyway! He doesn't come on here any more but if I remember correctly he didn't have good results either. The breath test is so easy and not really expensive. Ok, I ranted long enough!

Hi Lisa,

I just got off xifaxin - I did not have any negative side effects, I was also on Cipro for 7 days too, but I didn't feel much of a difference, but then again, my eating wasn't the best, I was kind of testing it! I was eating a lot of cheese, yogurt etc. I was eating lots of spicy foods etc! Once I cut out dairy, I started to notice a change, I am already gluten-free, I also made some other changes - have you heard of FODMAPS? If you go to the site, or email me - I can give you some guidance, this has helped me the most over the past several days - I have a headcold now and I am still feeling better, I am finally digesting foods! So, maybe a combo of it all is making a difference. I will know more in a week or so!

http://www.ibsfree.net/ibsfree_at_last/ I had a dietician recommend it - she had met the author.

Good Luck!!! Keep us posted! Oh, it's a really easy med to take, doesn't matter about with meals etc - that made it a piece of cake!

Lisa,

Rifaximin did nothing for me, expect give me some pretty ugly stomach pains. I do hear it helps some with IBS (i.e. Dr. Pimental) and those with travelers diarrhea. Personally, at the doses they had me taking, it made me feel toxic and nauseous.

If you have IBS-type symptoms, Bentyl may help you quite a bit. If you have inflammation, then what I have learned from this board and elsewhere is that you have IBD. Also, I never really believed in the "IBS" diagnosis.

I watched "The Doctors" not too long ago and they said Doctors are prescribing Xifaxan for IBD with great success. I think your Doc is prescribing the right thing, based on his information. It is also given for Traveler's diarrhea. Try it and see if you get well.

I take Tetracycline 2x a day for years, off and on, whenever I want to, and it makes me much better. My Gastro Doc prescribes it to me as 60 pills per month.
It kills the bacteria that gives me gas. He said the only risk is that I will become Imune to it and it won't work, but that has not happened. I have been taking it off and on for 10 years. He said Cdiff is a very low risk with Tetracycline, which is true for me.

Wow Lisa. Being a newbie to this whole thing I just want to say good luck. It is really difficult to know who's advice to follow and what to do when you are sick. I can understand your frustration with the folks here when you getting a treatment plan from your doc they say won't work. I have a similar problem as my hubby is a GI pathologist and thinks the whole world revolves around "western medicine" and their "take this medicine" mentality, yet, not every person who comes here for support will have the same response to a treatment that others have had. All you can do is what feels right to you. I am hoping your antibiotic works wonders for you!!! :-)
