are there any high sensitive persons (HSP) here?

Post by harma »

Writing my other message, I just wondered, is there anybody here ever heard of the concept of high sensitive persons (shortly HSP) and if so do they consider themselves be one?

HSP was "invented" by Elaine Aron. Until about 10 years ago I had never heard of it, a counselor made me attentive of it. As I always do than, go the library and read any book I can find about it. It opened my eyes. My whole life (and still do) I have the feeling of being different and "not fitting in", doesn't matter how hard I try. For me things easily get to much. Reaction is, don't get involved so much, keep your distance. But than I think, how? I can't, that would me mean taking distance of something what I am, not what I do. Can be big things, but it's more in the small things.

Knowing about this, didn't solve the problem, but understanding it made a lot easier to deal with.

Harma--

I am not, but my mom is. She just recently found out about it, and it really explained a lot about her. I think it must be hard to be an HSP. For instance, she and my father have been divorced for 30 years, and on his side of the family (which I am more like) we are constantly joking with each other, trying to "get one over" on the other person. We all have weird senses of humor. When I accidentally do this to my mom, she takes me seriously and gets her feelings hurt. She thinks I am being mean. When she explained the concept of HSP to me, it made complete sense, so now I am careful not to say anything that might hurt her feelings.

Love,

Maggie

Harma I am not sure if I would fit the classical description of HSP, but due to a childhood which had a lot of physical and emotional abuse, I was very sensitive to various interpersonal interactions for a number of years.

I would say until the age of 25 I would react very similar to someone with 'biological' HSP but after working with counselors for a couple of years I was able to better understand and address the feelings of self worth and self doubt that would greatly influence how I would over-react to someones 'benign' comments.

sorry maybe I did not explain it well enough, with sensitive I don't mean sensitive to reactions of people. I don't think I am like mags mum or maybe that's another way of sensitivity, I like joking even when I am the "victim". What I am talking about is more a biological sensitivity, It is not something you can overcome or become, you are born with it (at least that is how I see it). For example, I have a lot of allergies skin (scratch scratch), nose (sneeze sneeze) and now also food. I smell things far before others smell, hear things other people don't even notice (I don't hear better, I just notice things earlier). In summer I sleep with a mask before my eyes, otherwise rise and shine at 4 in morning. If a room is too hot or too cold, others can just ignore it, I can't. Only thing on my mind is too hot or too cold. Very easily low blood sugar (and if I don't eat eventually I think I will faint).

It's like the whole nerve system is much more sensitive than average (I often compare my self with a to sharply tuned fire alarm).

But also I am horrible with working under direct stress. But only if I can't control my own time.

To medication and chemical stuff like alcohol or drugs HSP people have a much stronger reaction too. Not that I have any experience with drugs at all (I am "the only one" in Holland that never has smoked hasj or weet  , although what they say of Holland it's true, you can buy it (even in Groningen) everywhere). I think that my sensitivity is one of the reasons that 1 pill entocort has from the start been enough to me.

Also I can sense people's mood, also of course by looking at their face or body language. But there is something I can sense vibes through a room, kind of energy. Not always and not always focussing on it and it's not something like paranormal, that I "know" or "can see" things. It's more like feeling/sensing an energy. Sometimes this can be confusing, when i think everybody does this. I really can be surprized I noticed things others missed totally. They even have than no idea what I am talking about.

Maybe its all a bit hocus pocus I talk about, but I thought maybe there are more people like that here.

Joe, that's quite a lot a childhoud with emotional and physical abuse. I know from personal experience how deep a difficult childhood can sign you for life and how much effort it takes to overcome it. Respect!!!

Dear Harma

I think I know what you mean. I have to have total darkness to go to sleep and stay asleep. Also people have been amazed at how sensitive my back is. If they try and massage it, I just convulse.

Best, ant

Hi Harma,

Post by smg2001 »

I guess you could consider me a high sensitive person. Although not all the time, I can pick up on a person's mood, feelings, thoughts as well as the vibe of a room full of people. It sounds crazy and often times I wonder if that does make me crazy, considering this is not your every day normal experience.

I do have a few friends that have embraced my "psychic abilities",as well as my family. My mom calls me "the mind reader". My half brother is well known for his ability to read tarot cards and eerily call out things that have happened or have yet to happen down to the smallest detail. I tend to freak people out as well as myself when these, uh, events happen. It isn't something I can exactly control, but I have noticed if I'm relaxed enough or tired, I pick these things up.

Do you often get those "gut feelings" about things? Do your bones/joints ache or do you have headaches when there is a weather change? Also do you have Fibromyalgia in addition to MC? I know the two run hand in hand. I've wondered if there was a correlation between health conditions where the patients are very sensitive to medications, allergies, foods, people, etc. and having the ability to pick up certain energies.

Pay no attentions to the questions I posted. I looked up HSP and got some answers

Absolutely, I tend to think of myself as an HSP. My niece is also very sensitive so I suspect the genetic link.
