Cocoa

Discussions can be posted here about mediator release testing (MRT), as offered by Oxford Biological Technologies, in conjunction with the LEAP program, which is claimed to determine a relative level of sensitivity to various foods and chemicals by measuring an increase in the ratio of liquids to solids in a blood sample that has been exposed to a specific allergen.

Cocoa

Post by Kari »

Here is a contradiction in my MRT scores. I tested highly sensitive to coffee, as well as moderately sensitive to caffeine. However, I did not test reactive to cocoa, so silly me finally went out and bought some pure cocoa powder and made hot chocolate today - yum.

Well, I have been feeling very "charged", which had me wondering (you might have noticed that I've been unusually active on the board today:). Then my brain kicked in - cocoa has CAFFEINE!!! All I can say is that the high was wonderful when it lasted!!! I actually still feel slightly buzzed  . I'm wondering how worried I have to be about this - if the only symptom I experience when all is said and done is a wonderful buzz - why deprive myself?????

Guess I'll find out later how this story ends  .

Love,
Kari

I can't argue with that logic, especially when it comes to chocolate.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.

Lucky you, Kari!

I checked around and found out the following about caffeine:

Hershey's cocoa - 8.4 mg./tablespoon
brewed coffee - 13.4 mg./oz.
decaf coffee - 0.7 mg./oz.
brewed tea - 5.9 mg./oz.
green tea - 3.1 mg./oz.

Maybe the cocoa caffeine amount was small enough that you didn't react. Wouldn't that be great? I know you can't do coffee, but how about tea? Anyway, hopefully you will tolerate the cocoa and can add it into your diet. Unfortunately, I am reactive to cocoa. Bummer, huh?

Hugs,

Polly

Well, so far so good in terms of reacting to cocoa !!! My hot drink has been camomile tea - adding hot cocoa to my list of drinks would be quite nice - cocoa was actually one of the lowest reactives on my results. If all goes well today, I will try it again in a couple of days. I do wish I could have coffee, as it is by far my favorite hot drink, but beggars can't be choosers. I'd love to switch off with you Polly  .

I noticed that cocoa is not listed on my rotation diet sheet, so they must have cross-referenced the caffeine intolerance with anything that contains it (yeah MRT). The good news is that I tested barely into the yellow for caffeine, so my fingers are crossed that I can tolerate it. If so, I can also add green tea, which I'm fond of. Unfortunately, coffee is slightly into the red territory, so trying it is likely quite a ways away  .

Gloria - thanks for your endorsement - coming from a fellow Norwegian and perfectionist, that means a lot  .

Polly - thanks for the stats.

Love,
Kari
