Phase 1 Meal Plan (Modified)

Discussions can be posted here about mediator release testing (MRT), as offered by Oxford Biological Technologies, in conjunction with the LEAP program, which is claimed to determine a relative level of sensitivity to various foods and chemicals by measuring an increase in the ratio of liquids to solids in a blood sample that has been exposed to a specific allergen.

Joe,

IMHO don't change but one thing about your diet for now. If you change several things which Leap tends to do you won't know which thing it was if you have a reaction, especially if you are going to be traveling. I just commented to DH this morning that it has been 6 weeks now on the leap diet and I haven't eaten out one time. Difficult to do if you are traveling. I think Gloria pulled it off when she went to Hawaii but she really was able to plan and organize beyond belief but that is her natural personality anyway. If you haven't been eating quinoa don't try it unless that is the one thing you are going to change. And then you have the stress factor to add in. Good luck in your travels and diet! Waiting until you come back to really investigate the full Leap challenge would be your best bet.

Pat great advice and I agree with the other posts here as well. It would be better to wit until after the trip to start the LEAP process.

I think I will try quinoa though as a possible alternate to at least some of my rice intake. I have to remember that rice settles fine and I know that other foods do not so my reaction to rice may not be seen in my GI system or at least not that I notice on the Imuran. I will probably still be having rice until I get back, but will be potentially adding quinoa and some white potatoes which I do tolerate to offset having rice all the time. I have almost 3 weeks to try quinoa and learn how to cook it some.

As far as traveling I did make the trip to Oz last August and at that time I carried all my own foods for the plane rides and when in Brisbane I had a hotel room with a kitchen and did shop at some good stores that Gabes recommended. With that type of planning its pretty easy to control your diet while traveling.

Thanks again for all the input Pat.

Mary Beth,

Glad you enjoyed that book, too. It really was a new kind of opening into the world of the dog - even for those of us who have spent a *lot* of time pondering our dogs!

Joe, it must be very empowering to know you've made this very same trip work. That should take some of the stress off and further up your odds of success. Best of luck with your quinoa experiment.

Joe,

The easiest way to test quinoa may be to try some quinoa pasta. However, I just looked online, and there may not be pure quinoa pasta - looks like corn is added to it. Does anyone know if they make 100% quinoa pasta?

Sara and MB,

I bought the book tonight! Thanks for the reviews.

Love,

Polly

Ancient Harvest quinoa pasta is made with corn and Andean Dream is made with rice . . . I have never seen a plain one.

I've looked for plain quinoa pasta, too and haven't been able to find any. I have tried to make tortillas out of quinoa, and it's too gummy. The same with amaranth. That may be why we can't find pasta for them.

I'm a newbie and trying to absorb all this new information about MC. I was told no caffeine, but I notice in this discussion that coffee and tea were suggested to be okay. I'm getting confused! How do we do on caffeine?

WOW, a lot of good information Joe. If it were me, and I am no expert by a long shot. But, I wouldn't fix what isn't broken for now. I agree with the others. It's only a few weeks, and it might be best for you to eat the foods you are sure of to keep everything settled. Once you get to Oz you could start playing around with the new diet.

See you soon,
Nancy

If caffeine caused you to have D back before you ever developed MC, then it will still cause you to have D, now. If caffeine didn't cause any problems before you developed MC, then it shouldn't cause any problems now.

Caffeine is a secretagogue, and because of that, doctors just assume that it will make the D worse, but they are wrong.

Thanks, Tex! I've been experimenting, and coffee, even decaf, makes my tummy rumble, but tea seems to be okay.

Most of us tolerate tea very well, and in many cases, it seems to be soothing, and helps with digestion.

Coffee has always caused me to have D, so I never developed the habit of drinking it. Tea, though, works just fine for me.

You're very welcome,
