Trail Mix Musings

Discussions can be posted here about mediator release testing (MRT), as offered by Oxford Biological Technologies, in conjunction with the LEAP program, which is claimed to determine a relative level of sensitivity to various foods and chemicals by measuring an increase in the ratio of liquids to solids in a blood sample that has been exposed to a specific allergen.

Trail Mix Musings

Post by Polly »

Hi Good Buddies,

I was so excited the other day to find a trail mix that contained only my safe foods. It's called Cape Cod Cranberry Mix by Woodstock Farms and contains: raisins, dates with rice flour, cranberries (cane sugar and sunflower oil),walnuts, apples, and coconut. It is processed in a facility with gluten, dairy, soy, etc., as are so many commercial products.

I started thinking about how different each of us LEAPERS is with regard to specific sensitivities, and how my trail mix probably wouldn't be safe for anyone else here. Then I had a "D'OH" moment. Each of us can make up our own trail mix using only our safe foods. Of course! And the mix can change as new foods are tested and found to be safe. Whatever dried fruits, nuts, seeds, oils, and sweeteners we can tolerate can be used.

I know you creative cooks are laughing at me right now for "discovering" something so obvious, but for me it was a revelation. First of all, trail mix is so easy to have on hand for a snack - especially when on the go. Secondly, it is much fresher this way. I have always noticed how stale the commercial trail mixes seem to taste. And lastly, we can minimize those impurities that are so often found in commercial products, even those that appear to be safe.

Polly xoxo

You know Polly I just had the same Doh! moment as well... I always would pick up the packages of trail mix at the HF store and realize there was some ingredient that i could not tolerate. If I were smart enough I would go into the next isle and there would be all the bins with each of the separate ingredients from which I could easily make up my own mix.... that's what I did today after reading this post

Doh!!

I'd give my eye teeth to eat trail mix. I'm sure someday I'll get there. You're making me drool.

You will get there, Arlene. I'd bet on it!
