Nausea and Pepto Bismol

Post by nancyl »

I know I have asked questions about Pepto Bismol before, but don't think I asked this one. I started taking 6-8 a day about 8 days ago. My new symtom is nausea. I wake up feeling fine, no nausea, then of course I hit the bathroom. I usually take the P-B before breakfast. Then the nausea hits and lasts most of the morning. I was wondering if anyone has found this as a side effect?

I called for my Enterolab testing kit today.

Hi Nancy,

I sure did. Not only nausea but vomiting too. I can't tolerate PB at all. Good to hear your going the enterolab route.

Hugs,

Polly

nancy,

People who are sensitive to salicylates (aspirin/NSAIDS) shouldn't take pepto. Many with MC need to avoid salicylates. Just a thought.

Thanks Polly and Mary Beth. I knew I'd get some good answers here.

I have had a bleeding ulcer in the past, and enough NSAIDS to last a lifetime when I was misdiagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 1995. I do have a sensitive system. If it's not too much trouble could you lead me to a good website regarding this so I can present to my new doctor when I see him in two weeks?

Same reaction I had to pepto. Consider it the worst treatment I ever had.

Nancy,

Take your pick:
Allergy alert: Contains salicylate. Do not take if you are:

* Allergic to salicylates (including aspirin)
* Taking other salicylate products
http://www.pepto-bismol.com/pepto-original-liquid.php
Before taking bismuth subsalicylate,

*

tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to salicylate pain relievers such as aspirin, choline magnesium trisalicylate, choline salicylate (Arthropan), diflunisal (Dolobid), magnesium salicylate (Doan's, others), and salsalate (Argesic, Disalcid, Salgesic); or any other medication.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

In some patients bismuth subsalicylate may cause dark tongue and/or grayish black stools. This is only temporary and will go away when you stop taking this medicine.

* Anxiety
* any loss of hearing
* confusion
* constipation (severe)
* diarrhea (severe or continuing)
* difficulty in speaking or slurred speech
* dizziness or lightheadedness
* drowsiness (severe)
* fast or deep breathing
* headache (severe or continuing)
* increased sweating
* increased thirst
* mental depression
* muscle spasms (especially of face, neck, and back)
* muscle weakness
* nausea or vomiting (severe or continuing)
* ringing or buzzing in ears (continuing)
* stomach pain (severe or continuing)
* trembling
* uncontrollable flapping movements of the hands (especially in elderly patients) or other uncontrolled body movements
* vision problems

Thanks Tex for all that information. I will print it and bring it along to my appointment in case it's needed.
I know I need to take responsibility for meds that I take and should have read more about pepto myself. I will be doing that in the future. You think I would have learned by now. LOL
I just looked at the copy of my colonoscopy report and it states - allergy: aspirin. He then proceeds to tell me to take pepto 8 times a day for 8 weeks and if that doesn't work, try Asacol. So I guess I'm going to share some of the blame with him seeing he has it all written up in the same paragraph.

I am much more hopeful about my new doctor. Who knows, maybe the Enterolab testing and more knowledge about foods will also help.

Nancy,

I had a bad reaction to Pepto Bismol, too. No vomiting or nausea, but worse D all night long.

Pepto made me throw up..even as a kid. Maybe the clue was way back then.. that I would have colitis later....

I just thought I'd add my 2 cents... Pepto tablets GIVE me D, while the liquid agrees with me just fine. While your reaction is probably to salicylates, there are other ingredients that may be involved.
