ER visit yesterday

Post by m »

Since I was still feeling bad (nauseous and weak) yesterday I took myself to the ER. I've never had to go to the ER for a problem with myself before. Anyway, they knew nothing about microscopic colitis or Entecort, for that matter. After doing the standard blood work, urine analysis, they sent me off for a CT scan of the abdomen, looking for diverticulis they said. I said no, i was sure I didn't have diverticulutis since I had no pain at all. I refused the enema but couldn't refuse the oral contrast solution which was mixed with Crystal Lite (yuck). Nothing was found. They gave me some kind of shot for nausea that they give cancer patients and a shot of steriod even though I'm already taking steroids and 4 huge potassium pills (I was a tad low on that). They topped me up with fluids and sent me on my way.
Now I don't feel quite so nauseous or weak but I have the watery D. I'm guessing it was the Crystal Lite. I asked what was in it but they didn't know. I guess I can't have it both ways, no D AND no nausea.
What a fun time. Will this never end?

I feel confident that you WILL win this battle, Melissa. It's just going to take a little while to work out your strategy.

Did your doctor tell you that the Entocort can take a while to work? I know some have had results quickly but since we are all so different, it's not a given and you apparently are in a severe flare.

Don't give up.

Melissa,

I am sorry that you are in such agony - I think Shirley is right, you will win the battle but it takes a little time to get everything figured out. Also, please give yourself a little time to let the Entocort work.

Karen

Hiya Melissa,

It stinks that you still have the nausea and weakness. Did they find any evidence of dehydration? Was it IV fluids they gave you?

What are you drinking at home to replace water/electrolytes? Perhaps that is what is making you queasy. Plus if it is something like a sports drink, some people get D from all the sugar. Have you checked out the article on Dehydration and Electrolyte Imbalance in the Newbie forum? There are some good ideas there for replacement solutions.

Have you asked your doc to prescribe an anti-nausea med? Like phenergan?

Hang in there. It WILL get better. Just keep repeating that like a mantra.

Love,

Polly

P.S. Oh YUCK! You are correct about Crystal Lite! I looked it up, and it has citric acid, aspartame, "natural" flavors, yellow coloring, and that BHA preservative. It would make me sick for a week if I drank some! Double YUCK!
Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.

Hi Melissa,

I agree with Polly. When the effects of the ingredients in the Crystal Lite wear off, you may feel much better. Many of us can't handle aspartame, and citric acid causes problems for those of us who are corn intolerant, to say nothing of the "natural" flavoriing, and the preservative.

Yes, I'm fairly confident that the latest watery D episode is due to the Crystal Light. The D was getting better BEFORE yesterdays ER visit. I'm hoping the imodium and the Entecort will stop it quickly.

Polly - yes, they gave me IV saline and an anti-nausea drug they perscribe for cancer patients. I tried phenergen once before and it did nothing. I don't think I was very dehydrated, or it would have shown up in my blood or urine work, right? Nonetheless, I was a bit worried about it because of the weakness and the lenght of time and though it certainly couldn't hurt to have the IV.

I've always had a "nervous stomach." I can remember as a kid any time I had to do something scary (talk in front of the class, etc.) I'd feel nausea. Or if I got too hungry. I wonder if I produce alot of stomach acid and that's what's making me nauseous. Tums help sometimes but I have to eat a handful of them.

I didn't really expect that the ER would majically cure everything at once. I just wanted to stop the nausea and be sure something else more serious wasn't going on. I can hardly wait to see my GI on Sept 1. He's gonna want to do an endoscopy I just know it. I'm really anxious about that. I have a very strong gag reflex and I hear they don't knock you out completely. Do you think the new camera capsule could be used to check out my stomach and small intestines instead?

Hi Melissa,

I have a gag reflex problem sometimes, too. The camera could probably be used, but it may depend on whether or not your doctor is interested in taking any biopsy samples of your duodenum, since the camera can't do that.

Good luck with the exam,

Melissa, I am so sorry that you are having such a rough time...it is so unfair.

I spent a lot of time in the ER in the early days of MC. The doctors began to think that there was nothing wrong with me, and that it was all in my head..my blood work was always normal, and the D usually stopped after a four hour wait in the ER. The only good thing they ever did for me was get me in quickly to see a GI who turned out to be very good and listened to what I was telling him.

The weakness and nausea are probably a result of the low Potassium. You will probably feel much better after the effects of the crystal light wear off...yuck!

Like the others have said, keep yourself hydrated...Gatorade is great, and pretty low in sugar..I don't believe it has enough sugar in it to give you D.

I hope you get to feeling better soon, I am thinking of you.

Love and hugs,

geri

My husband has had the endoscopy and he was put to sleep. When I had my endoscopy (by the same doctor), it was at the same time as the colonoscopy so I was asleep also. I do believe it depends on the doctor and hospital policy whether they actually put you under or not.

Good Luck.

Melissa,

Be sure to tell the doctor your fears and worries about the procedure and the gag reflux. Not only will they be able to put your fears to rest, it will make you feel more comfortable knowing that they are aware of your worries. Maybe they will be able to accomodate some of them also!

Take care of yourself. I hope you begin to feel better very soon!
