I agree... we are all different. Six years of entocort did wonders for me..got my life back.. one day on asacol and I was barfing my guts out into the waste basket while sitting on the "throne".

Magnesium sterate that some idiot medical professional suggested to me early on.. did me in too...

Tex--

One other thing that disturbs me is the fact that Big Pharma can now advertise their products in the marketplace beside everything else. These television, print, and internet ads lead to a consumer DEMAND for these medications that would otherwise not exist. The two that personally resonate with me are, of course, statins and psychoative meds. IMHO, the FDA is once again being extremely irresponsible in this regard, as many of these psych meds are being prescribed by GP's and are very powerful, with serious side effects.

The advertising has all kinds of unintented consequences... several years ago I got shingles (along with pneumonia, colitis and a broken rib from coughing). Anyway, the family doc put me on valtrex... at the time valtrex was being advertised on tv non stop and all kinds of warnings about safe sex... I was floored when I read the prescription.. and said to the doctor..this is for SHINGLES you said.. on tv it is all about a sexually transmitted disease... he laughed and wrote.."for shingles" on the prescription so I wouldn't have to face the funny looks at the pharmacy we go to...LOL

Mags and GrannyH,

I agree that the advertising campaigns really suck, and the sad part is that Big Pharma has an endless supply of money to spend, so that they can afford to meet the letter of the law and spend a lot of high-dollar tv time, rattling off a seemingly-endless list of serious side effects and other risks, and consumers are so blindly trusting, (and so used to hearing so much BS on tv, I suppose), that they just ignore the risk warnings, and they run to their doctors, demanding a prescription. Everyone wants a "magic pill", even though that they should have learned, as they grew out of childhood, that "magic pills" don't exist, in the real world.

IMO, this is just more evidence that the FDA is an industry-promoting agency, rather than a consumer protection agency. :sigh:

Tex
isnt part of the issue based on who funds the FDA? (Govt) and where do they get that money to fund it? (% of moneys from Pharmaceutical sales)

Gabes--

Not only that, but many docs in the FDA also have relationships with the big drug companies. The very people who are voting whether or not to approve a drug may be receiving income from the company that makes it.

Both of you are quite correct, of course. In this country, all regulatory agencies are funded mostly by the businesses that they regulate, by means of license fees and "user fees".

For example, I'm a corn processor, so in my business, I pay "user fees" to the Texas Department of Agriculture, Office of the Texas State Chemist, Department of Feed and Fertilizer. The fee is charged on every ton of corn that I sell, on both wholesale and retail levels.

This was in Thursday's USA Today editorial column: Sherrod Brown: Drug firm fleecing pregnant women
http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/fo ... _ST1_N.htm
This month, pregnant women using a popular drug to prevent premature labor could see the price per dose increase from $10 to $1,500. Almost overnight, a drug company created a monopoly for an existing product by exploiting drug safety laws — bilking taxpayers and threatening public health.
Here's the rebuttal: FDA approval costs more
http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/ed ... _ST1_N.htm
Why will Makena cost more than a non-FDA approved compounded drug? FDA-approved medications must meet high standards for effectiveness, safety and quality. It costs money to gain this approval, maintain FDA manufacturing standards and fulfill FDA requirements.

It costs money to have an FDA approved drug because the drug not only has to have the proper active ingredients.. they must have solvable other ingredients that make it all work.

The problem with generic drugs is they DO NOT have to pass the solvable tests. We have found that out the hard way.. the way INSISTED upon by our drug plan. We MUST use generic first.. only when they don't work can we get the brand name drugs... generic Norvasc for both my husband and myself did nothing.. we might as well have not taken them at all...

Ahh, drug marketing. Where are all the ads for Asacol and Endocort? This has me thinking of my next post...
