Move Over Guys & Gals..........

Post by starfire »

Here I come!!!

I'm jumping in with both feet on the Paleo diet.

Had lunch a while ago:

Hamburger Patty (Laura's - no growth hormones, no antibiotics)
Used olive oil in pan.
Lightly steamed cauliflower, sprinkled with FRESH chopped dill weed.
2 smallish ripe tomatoes from our garden.
Water to drink.

I did add salt to everything.

I am not suffering from D or overly concerned with my MC, but I'd really like to FEEL GOOD for a change AND get off some/all of my prescription meds. I consulted with a man who owns a pharmacy in Sayre, Pa. who helps people take charge of their health through diet and supplements.
He didn't sell me a thing today. Said if I want to do this I needed to go on the diet (doesn't even want me to eat fruits for a couple of months) and if I chose to stop taking the Nexium then he would help me figure out what to do next. He said my stomach has to get back to normal before supplements will help. He has apparently helped a LOT of people in the area in this manner. I just heard about him yesterday. He talked with me for at least an hour and a half. There is no charge for the service but if you want, you can donate to a children's charity in which he is active. Of course, I did so.

I can't believe I just heard about this - I am leaving for Florida Oct. 1 but he said he has an 800 # and I'm welcome to use it. Anyway, I was impressed, and as I said, I'd really like to feel good for a change and not hurt/ache, etc., etc., etc.

Well, can you believe it - I had a few malted milk balls lying around in the drawer and I thought, "I need to get rid of those", so I ate them!!!

So......I've already broken the diet after only one meal, BUT, I'm not beating myself up about it. The Nexium isn't out of my system yet anyway......just took one this AM before the apt.

Having a cup of herbal tea right now (no caffine) and it's tasting really good.

Shirley,

I just wrote 2 posts and both were lost in cyberspace. Just want to say..... :welcome: to the CAVE!

Three cheers for you! :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader:

Was this a sudden decision or have you been thinking about it?

Looking forward to talking paleo with you!

Love,

Polly

Thanks for the welcome

It isn't exactly a sudden decision. It's been bouncing around in my head for a while (plenty of room in there, you know  ).

I got a boost in that direction when my Sister-in-Law stopped by yesterday after having a consultation herself. She is going to try the diet also. I called her this afternoon and we plan to try and encourage each other. Of course, I will get encouragement from here but perhaps I can pass it on to her. She has had RA since her teens. She is my age. She is on some heavy duty meds for that which she would like to eliminate eventually. I hope she can make it. She has had both knees replaced, the knuckles on one hand replaced and the other hand needs it, years ago some doctor fused her toe joints. She is a sweetheart and so kind-hearted.

Well, anyway, I do appreciate all the good wishes, etc.

Sometime after my Paleo lunch I had some hazlenuts and the herbal tea. Right now drinking a cup of decaf hazlenut coffee. I don't feel hungry at all. I hope it's because of the real food and not the Malted Milk Balls.

Good for you Shirley! I'll help to encourage you even though I will not participate.

You :crack: me up with the Milk balls! I guess I would rather you "get rid of them from the drawer" than dig them out of the trash because they were "going to waste in there" ! ROFLMAO

You are just a sweatheart! You'll do great!

Hi Shirley,

I'm with Mars on the malted milk balls--it's a good thing you got those suckers out of the way, so they won't be tempting you in the future. LOL.

Don't think for a second that the paleo-people wouldn't have done the same thing, if they had come across them in their foragings. They would have thought they were pretty tasty, I'm sure.

You'll do ok.

Shirley,

This is a great call for you- I'm happy to hear your making this change in your diet. I have no doubt, that you will see improvment in how you feel in general, and how your body aches will subside.

As Polly said - Welcome to the CAVE ( love that line )

Love you,
Joanna

Hi Shirley and WELCOME,

I am happy for you that you've made this decision - low carb is good for a lot of people and the paleo diet is really very easy compared to most diets. Because it is so easy it is also easier to stay on it - of course you can always make adjustments and decide to stop eating paleo if it doesn't work out well.

I sense a determination in your post - you are not a person known to switch from one thing to the next; you always come off as being a very well balanced person (how I envy you that!!, sigh).

The malt balls are no big deal - laughing!!
There is no punishment for not being strict; just do it your way. All change takes time and it is no doubt going to be an adjustment. The most important thing is that you do what is right for you and stay in charge of your own path to better health and well being. FEELING WELL is so important.

Let us know how we can help you.

Love,
Karen

Hi Oma,

The paleo diet basically consists of food items that were available to humans during the period that predates the development of agriculture. IOW, it is based on food that was available from about 20,000 years ago, back to about 2,000,000 years ago. (Some say that agricultural development began about 40,000 years ago, and some say that it was as recent as about 10,000 years ago, but there is pretty strong evidence that not much grain production occurred before about 20,000 years ago).

The theory is that the human digestive system was developed for food that was available during this period of time, and there have not been enough generations since agricultural production was developed, to allow our digestive systems to evolve to where we can properly digest the foods produced by modern agriculture--namely grains, dairy products, citrus fruits, etc.

The true paleo diet excludes all grains, all dairy products, sugar, and most modern frunts and vegetables. It allows meat, (and poultry), fish, many types of tree nuts and berries, and tubers, for example.

Love,
Wayne
