Australia Adventures Travel Log II

Well folks I'm on my way to the land down under for a bit of business and a lot of fun.

Like the last trip I will use this post to update everyone on our adventures and of course post a lot of photos.

Thanks again to everyone over this past year for your support and kindness, this really is an amazing forum and a wonderful online family.

I am currently passing over Des moines Iowa and it looks like all the flights will be on time, unlike last august when I missed the connecting flight to Sydney.

For the foods this trip here is what I have packed:

Sandwiches with Udis bread, Applegate GF sf turkey a bit of mustard and a slice of tomato.

Sunkist salmon in a pouch

Enjoy life GF df sf chocolate bars

Lara bars - various

Utz potato chips

Bananas

Hard boiled eggs

Carlas rice crackers with which I brought single serving pouches of peanut and almond butter.

Overall I am not going to go hungry...

It sounds like you are well-prepared for the trip, food-wise. Lots of protein, some carbs - it should last you for the trip. I hope all your flights are on time.

Enjoy your visit! It sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun.

Hi Joe,

I envy your travel food list - the only items on your list I believe I can relatively safely have right now are potato chips and nut butter (sans rice cake). You and Gabes have come a lot further in your MC management and healing than I have, so it is wonderfully inspiring to read your posts. I'm hoping that in a year from now, I will feel much more relaxed and in control.

Anyhow, I'm going on a trip to Norway middle of June, so have 2 months left to "worry". Honestly, at this point, I wish I had never signed up for it because my healing is still so tenuous. My question to you is how you transport your food, and if airport security gives you any trouble with bringing it along.

when i travelled last year i had a letter from my doctor stating that i had medical condition with serious food intolerances (the text of this is somewhere on this forum) and i asked the travel agent to have the following notation put on my intinerary " requested special meals can not be guaranteed"

with these two items i had no issues taking food and liquid through the security. i did this at Brisbane, Hong Kong and Paris airports before i got to my destination. and vice versa on the way back. I only carried enough food in my hand luggage to get me through the transit.

I have a small cooler bag/esky bag it is like a large lunch box in soft material. I freeze the apple juice portions (in the cardboard/foil tetra pack) and that would keep the other items cold for about 10 hours. on that trip as i was not able to do any food prep before flying home, i survived on apple juice, rice cakes, corn cakes for the 30hours plus transit, not ideal but it was better than risking contimination. like you i can not tolerate banana's so there was no fruit option for me.

For the departure I made sure i had a good serve of gabes mc safe cooking before i went to the airport, for the return, i made sure i had good proteins etc in the meals in the 24 hours before the flight.
another hint, do a cook up before you go away, and come home to a weeks worth of rations in the freezer.

Thanks everybody I just made it into the Sydney airport and am awaiting the connecting flight to Brisbane.

The foods worked out great and I did sleep well on the 16 hour light from LA to Sydney, all in all a perfect trip so far. Having safe foods like this is absolutely necessary.

I should be in Brisbane in about 3 to 4 hours time where I will pick up a car and grab a shower at the hotel and then go food shopping.

Overall I am feeling great, my body is tolerating traveling this time much better than the trip in August.

Joe - great news - shows that with proper planning, travel is possible for us PPers. I'm so inspired by your story and look forward to the next chapters. Thanks for sharing your adventure, it's making me feel more at ease about my upcoming trip.

Joe,

I'm so glad you handled the trip OK. Whew! A 16-hour flight from L.A. to Sydney. I don't think you'll be doing that a lot once you move there.

I was going to write what Kari did - proper preparations are essential when travelling. It's what saved the day for my trip to Hawaii. Once you have a successful travel experience, you're not so fearful of doing it again.

Kari,

I'll try to look at your MRT list of foods to see if I can come up with some ideas. I don't think it's a good idea to starve yourself on the trip. Once you're in Norway, you'll have to insist on preparing your own meals, I'm afraid. That will be the trickiest part.

Have you tried eating yeast breads yet?

I am so glad you've had a smooth journey and tolerated it so well. You are an inspiration. I'm just hoping to make it into Boston tomorrow to watch my grandson run the Boston Marathon. Somehow, your 30 hour trips makes mine look like a little bump in the road. LOL
It's good that you were able to get a lot of rest on the flight too.

the other part of the prep is researching where you can get ingredients.

thanks to my familiarity with Brisbane, Joe has a detailed list (with pictures) of what products he can get and where to get them (some of them even have shelf location :wink: )

I did research online for my france trip. If you can find a celiac or crohns group on the net, where there are members based in Norway i am sure you will be able to confirm avialability of safe foods.

If you need a hand just holler! research and project planning is my forte!
