I ate gluten by mistake

Post by wonderwoman »

Last Thursday I was at my neighbors for a potluck salad luncheon. I was very careful about what I chose to eat. There was one dish that had mandarin oranges in it and what looked like very small rice. I tried it and it was so good I went back for a second helping. After finishing it I asked who made it and was told Cindy did. I asked her what those little things were in it and she said pasta. She showed me the package and it was very tiny pieces of macaroni made with wheat. She felt so bad because she knows I avoid eating gluten.

Fortunately, I did not have a reaction to it which is good. But what is bad about it is I might be tempted to try a little gluten in the future and I don't want to do that. Not after being GF since March 2010.

I have been completely off of Entocort for five weeks and doing very well. For the five weeks prior to that I was down to one Entocort a week. Gloria said awhile back if I can make it to 8 weeks, I am in remission. I can't wait.

We are traveling for three weeks beginning May 1st so I hope that with all the eating out I will be able to maintain my strict GF diet. It was last June that I got so very very sick while traveling. It was a month after being home that I went on Entocort.

I have been so very busy the last four months that I rarely get to read the posts. I see you have a lot of newbies here. Anyone finding this site is very fortunate. I can't say enough good things about all the people here who have helped me. :flowersmiley:

Charlotte,

We all have made the mistake of eating gluten or some other food on our forbidden list. We have to pick up the pieces and keep going, resolving to be more inquisitive the next time. I'm glad you didn't suffer any apparent consequences from the mishap.

I ate at a Brazilian restaurant last week while visiting my daughter. I had read that they only use salt as a flavoring, so I took the pork that was offered. I can only eat pork, turkey and lamb, and they didn't offer lamb, so I was anxious to eat the pork. As it landed on my plate, I noticed that it was a little shiny and asked if it had any other seasoning besides salt. The waiter said they put a garlic-butter sauce on it. I gave the pieces to DH and asked for some interior slices and cut the edges off. I think there was still residue left on my plate from the first slices. I had explosive D the next day. Live and learn.

That's great news! I hope you continue doing well and can make it past that 8 week marker.

Charlotte,

That's good news that the gluten in that dish didn't cause a reaction. That's a sign that you're healing well, and the amount may have been below your threshold for triggering a reaction.

Good for you for not immediately jumping to the mistaken conclusion that it means that you're not gluten-sensitive. So many people who have that experience seem eager to make the wrong decision, and resume eating gluten.

I hope your upcoming trip is totally enjoyable. Thanks for the update, and congratulations on doing so well with your recovery program.

Hi Charlotte,

It's wonderful to hear how well you're doing - congratulations!!!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed that you'll pass the 8 week mark. Since you were able to tolerate a small amount of gluten, a lot of healing has surely taken place. Reading about your progress is very inspiring.

I totally relate to what you're saying - when you're doing well, it's hard to remember the agony of the past and easy to get a little "sloppy" about managing. It seems that every time I feel that things are going really well, and I get slightly less vigilant, there is a step backwards, but then my healing is still quite tenuous.

I was wondering what happened when you travelled last year? Did you mostly eat out, and do you think you accidentally ingested a lot of gluten? I'm asking since I'm travelling overseas in less than 2 months, and am worried about a HUGE set-back like the one you describe.

Love,
Kari

Great news Charlotte that you did not react to the pasta. I, like you, am not tempted to take any steps to reintroduce gluten to my diet. Just am better without it and no reason to stir the pot.

I got "glutened" last Friday and shock of all shocks I has no reaction  I ordered a sauteed shrimp dish with veggies and a wine sauce - when it arrived, the shrimp clearly had some sort of breading on it :???: I felt stupid for not asking (but to me sauteed does not mean breaded!) Anyways, I decided to pick it off and eat it anyways and cross my fingers - too hungry to wait - plus we had a time crunch situation...

I'd like to be to a point where if I accidentally eat something bad I don't pay for the next 48 hours...a gal can dream

Mary,
Did you confirm the shrimp had gluten on it? Sometimes, especially in asian food, they coat the meats in corn starch before sauteing.
