Immodium AD recalled?
Anyone know anything about this? I can't get any at all in the little town I live in, it's been recalled. Is there a good alternative?
I wasn't aware it had been recalled. The closest alternative is Lomotil, but, of course, Lomotil requires a prescription

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I called the phone # on the box of Imodium AD that I have and asked if there was a problem. The lady said there was no recall of Imodium but it was manufactured in a plant in Pennsylvania that had to shut down due to recalls of other products. There is a shortage of Imodium AD due to this closing. They hope to have it up and running soon. She said she would give me numbers where I could call in my area of stores who had it or I could order it on amazon.com or drugstore.com. The number I called for this info was 1-877-895-3665. Pat - thanks for that update - I was getting nervous, as my overseas trip is getting closer, and imodium has become my "MC crutch". Fortunately, I still have quite a few on hand, and don't take them very often.

Immodium AD is made by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a division of Johnson & Johnson, who is in big doodoo with the FDA right now. Their plants in Pennsylvania and Puerto Rico have nearly been shut down and are operating with onsite FDA oversight. These plants made all the children's meds that were recalled for contamination of all kinds - bacteria, dust and other particles, and no testing for contamination or consistent potency. These affected Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, and most recently, Topamax (a seizure med). It's truly criminal.
The feds say J&J also used bribes to sell implants in Greece, prescriptions in Romania, and to win contracts in Poland.
The company also paid kickbacks to win 19 contracts in Iraq under the United Nations' "oil for food" scheme.
The company will only pay $70 million in penalties.
If I were an Immodium AD user, I'd start looking for an alternative. They deserve a boycott!!

I think that Lomotil is a great alternative. I never had good results with Immodium AD. I gave me horrible dry mouth and really did not help my D. OTOH, Lomotil is much gentler, at least in my experience.

Regarding Topamax--it is now widely prescribed to treat migraines; and off-label to treat bipolar disorder. I found out from a friend who is a nurse practitioner that is is also widely used among medical pros as a weight-loss drug, as this is its major side effect! I was shocked, although I really shouldn't be.
I'm not a big fan of J & J--they have a medical supply plant about 25 miles from me that has manufactured faulty products that have resulted in the deaths of several people, and they are continually cited for pollution violations. Just driving by there you can be overcome by the waves of acetone coming from the plant...

Quite a few members here have found that they get better results from Imodium, than they do from Lomotil. Remember, we're all different, especially in our response to meds.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree that J & J seems to have a closet full of skeletons. This has been ongoing for some time.
Do you feel that most of the other pharmaceutical manufacturers are above all that, or could it be that they just haven't been caught, yet?

Just to clarify--I was not in any way implying that any person at any time at any place did not have better results with Immodium AD than with Lomotil. I was just stating that in my personal experience, I had better results with the latter, as it had been suggested that there was no alternative to Immodium AD earlier in the thread. Perhaps there are some people who have never tried Lomotil?
