rotavirus a cause of LC?
A reply to my post on my daughter Adelyn's story (Did Adelyn get GI infections like rotavirus early on? Your story makes me wonder if a food sensitivity in infancy (gluten or dairy) or a virus or bacteria eventually led to the LC) made me think that maybe rotavirus could be a cause of her LC. She was actually hospitalized with rotavirus two weeks ago and her pediatric GI who specializes in celiac told me that rotavirus can actually trigger celiac in people who are predisposed to it. At the time I was just thinking that maybe should could end up with Celiac later on in life, although we currently follow a strict gf diet. But after reading this reply I started thinking about it more. Although I don't remember her having rotavirus when she was a baby, I think there is a good possibility I could have when I was pregnant with her. While pregnant I was a fairly new preschool teacher and seemed to be getting a lot of the kids illnesses. I remember having a severe stomach bug that eventually required a trip to the doctors to get Zofran to stop the vomitting. Also, during labor I had a fever and infection and had to have antibiodics in the IV while in labor. Adelyn was very gassy and had colic throughout infancy and continued to have diarrhea and stomach pains which led to the diagnosis of LC when she was 3. Does anyone have any information or thoughts on rotavirus triggering LC?

Here's a research article on that topic, and it cites a lot of other references which might be of interest. Yes, there is a peptide in the amino acid chain of rotovirus that can mimic the primary peptide in the alpha gliadin amino acid chain to which most celiacs react. We have discussed this before, so you might be able to locate those discussions by searching the archives of this board. If you aren't able to locate them, I'll try to look them up later - I have to get to work, now, unfortunately.

Contrary to the opinion of most doctors, gluten-sensitivity is not limited to celiacs. Unfortunately, it apparently is linked with virtually all autoimmune diseases, including LC.
