Comprehensive List of Legumes
I found what looks like a fairly comprehensive list of legumes. I was quite surprised to see carob, jicama, licorice, and red tea on the list. Here is the address: http://g6pddeficiency.org/index.php?cmd=legumes.

lentils
Hello,
Do people who have problems with soy often have problems with lentils? I make lentils about once a month and my daughter never seemed to have problems. But I made them last night and she woke up crying in the middle of the night because her stomach hurt and I was thinking maybe it was the lentils. We are just about to eliminate soy completely because she has been expressing stomach pain again.

Hi Jessica,
Yes, unfortunately, it seems that most people who are sensitive to soy, are also sensitive to most other legumes, including lentils. There are exceptions, of course, but typically this seems to be the trend.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Me, too, Pat. Sigh.
Ant, I hadn't noticed the coco or the Nescafé. This is what I found in the cook's thesaurus about coco beans, or coco blanc beans: "coco bean = coco blanc bean Notes: The French use these beans for their cassoulets. Substitutes: haricot beans OR navy beans." Interesting...
I have never had Nescafé that I know of because I don't care for coffee, even living in the PNW, where there is a coffee stand on every corner. Love the smell, though. Of good coffee, not Nescafé, lol.
Sara, according to the venerable source Wikipedia, hog peanut is a legume. When it is ripe, it may be something to experiment with re a soy sensitivity.

Marliss,
Absolutely - I should have been more clear that the hog peanut/groundnut is a legume (can't miss it by the look of the leaves - it looks like a kinder/gentler wisteria, or sweetpeas on steroids). I would have guessed that the tubers (usually the eaten part) might be less reaction-prone than the beans themselves. But then there's that jicama issue... and of course the tubers are a different sort of storage tissue for plants, so maybe they'd have more in common with the beans than the leaves might?
Of course, the tubers are really only 'edible' when slathered with something (usually butter, but not for us!). I love growing edibles that are unusual... don't have to eat them all, necessarily!
As frustrating as it is that there's soy (and so many of the others on this list) in so many foods, at least this is a true family with some possibility of predictability. It seems as though figuring out fruits, veg & nuts is even more complex and confusing, though avoiding offenders may be easier.
Love,
Sara
