Study about birth month & celiac (!)

Post by sarkin »

This really startled me -

http://consumer.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=652636

- and worse, it undermines whatever persuasive thing I'd say to my brother (and/or his kids) based on whatever my gene test will say ;) He's a February baby, and I'm a June-gal... though we both spent our earliest years in California... whatever that adds to this Massachusetts story.

It's interesting especially for those with known GS or celiac genes, who have children or siblings with highly varied actual ability to tolerate gluten, as manifested by MC, other autoimmune issues, etc.

Editing to add - it really caught my attention in light of our recent discussion about seasonal allergies an symptoms. So many have mentioned that their allergies are better since going GF, *or* that digestive symptoms are worse during the peak of pollen season - and there are probably other connections I haven't thought of.

all of my GI flares seem to hit me as the season changes to Spring. I have serious grass pollen and pine tree allergies too. I don't know enough about histamines and how they react in the gut though.... I have to keep searching this forum to learn. I have spent most of my time on celiac.com but I feel I have to branch out if I am dealing with MC perhaps as well.

That's interesting, Quincy - Tex made an observation a couple of days back (I will look this up, but not tonight...) about seasonal allergies & MC symptoms. I think for some of us it may be specific to histamine/gut issues, but it's also possible that the immune system is just overwhelmed and over-reactive during allergy season, and it 'spills over' - not at all a technical term ;) I definitely seem to be having a harder time maintaining stability now that all the tree pollens are flying - but I'm so new to this that it could also be an undiscovered food intolerance, or something else instead (or in addition).

Mary Beth is a resident expert here on histamine, both as a professional dietician and a member with mast cell issues. It seems possible that that's a significant factor for me... maybe more so during this pollen season? Still in the research phases.

Hope you're finding help here, and wishing you health,

Sara

not sure what the mast cells are yet. thanks for your feedback. I took a shot of pepto bismal last night and I had just 2 semi normal visits to the jon today so perhaps my flare is quieting down thank God.

I wanted to try an anti-histamine when I was first dx'd last year but no doctor seemed to think it would make any difference so I just rode it out. some celiacs try benadryll but I didnt want to mess with it while taking the ssri.

Quincy - you may not have mast cell issues, please don't take that as a diagnosis from me (I don't know for certain that this is my situation, either - but am researching)...

I haven't taken an antihistamine, either. I do find using a neti pot with salt water keeps the symptoms less annoying, though it doesn't vanquish them entirely.

I also find Pepto Bismol helpful (I take the capsules) - some here have found it makes things worse. I'm so glad it's working for you to get things calmed down.

Best of luck - for me, tree season is worse than the grasses, so I can see light at the end of the tunnel for allergies... I hope! Maybe everything will be a little different this year, with MC symptoms...

Be well,
Sara
