Been having a rough time.

Discussions can be posted here about mediator release testing (MRT), as offered by Oxford Biological Technologies, in conjunction with the LEAP program, which is claimed to determine a relative level of sensitivity to various foods and chemicals by measuring an increase in the ratio of liquids to solids in a blood sample that has been exposed to a specific allergen.

I understand that, but once we have an MC diagnosis, all bets are off, because virtually none of the rules are chiseled in stone, from that point on. Just because a food/hormone/chemical worked fine yesterday, or today, does not guarantee that it will be safe tomorrow, unfortunately. Even if you had been in a flare when you started the HRT, and a few days later you went into remission, that does not guarantee, (or even imply), that HRT cannot cause a flare now. That may seem contrary to logic, but it's not.

Essentially, we're down to grasping at straws here, because we're running out of options, due to the fact that the conventional considerations don't appear to be sufficient to resolve your issues. I've included some more "straws" below.

Mary Beth,

You may be on to something, because the function of the goblet cells in the colonic mucosa is to secrete mucus, which in turn compacts the feces.

While we're grasping at straws, another possibility is D caused by impaired function of sodium ion/hydrogen ion exchanger 3.
Na+/H+ exchanger 3 (NHE3) provides a major route for intestinal Na+ absorption. NHE3 has been considered a target of proinflammatory cytokines and enteropathogenic bacteria, and impaired NHE3 expression and/or activity may be responsible for inflammation-associated diarrhea. However, the possibility of loss of NHE3 function reciprocally affecting gut immune homeostasis has not been investigated. In this report, we describe that NHE3-deficient mice spontaneously develop colitis restricted to distal colonic mucosa. NHE3–/– mice housed in a conventional facility exhibited phenotypic features such as mild diarrhea, occasional rectal prolapse, and reduced body weight. Genomewide microarray analysis identified not only a large group of transport genes that potentially represent an adaptive response, but also a considerable number of genes consistent with an inflammatory response. Histological examination demonstrated changes in the distal colon consistent with active inflammation, including crypt hyperplasia with an increased number of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine-positive cells, diffuse neutrophilic infiltrate with concomitant 15-fold increase in matrix metalloproteinase 8 expression, an increased number of pSer276-RelA-positive cells, and a significant decrease in periodic acid-Schiff-positive goblet cells.

Apparently, an adequate dietary intake of the essential amino acid threonine is also necessary for the production of mucus, so a deficiency of threonine could possibly contribute to an environment that might promote D.
Overall, our results suggest that adequate dietary threonine was critical in the production of mucus

Here's some info on threonine:

The bottom line is, yes, I believe that Pat may well have some sort of complicating factors that might be causing the D, even though she may be eliminating all possible sources of problems in her diet. Her GI system has been under fire for so many years, that we have to consider the possibility of possible unforeseen negative effects, ranging from nutrient deficiencies, to altered chemical processes, hormones, and possibly including damage due to medications that didn't work as planned, (such as antibiotics).

I started running low grade fever so maybe I just have a virus? Pat

Well that could certainly explain it. I hope it's not too unpleasant, and it runs it's course quickly .

Well, I am so much better. I am sure it was a virus. Yesterday I was still cramping and didn't feel up to par and of course the watery D. Today, no more cramping and only 2 small episodes of D. Maybe normal MC D? Anyway, I am on the mend. Thank Goodness!

Pat, what a relief - I'm so glad to hear this. Marliss posted recently that people outside this group would never understand "I thought I was having a flare, but I'm only sick!"

So we won't exactly rejoice that you're sick, but thankfully those storm clouds are already passing. PHEW.

Wishing you health in every sense,

Pat,

I'm so glad to read that things have settled down for you. I'm back on track, too. I realized that I ate a couple of tablespoons of rice from DH's Chinese dinner - he was sure it was just rice - but I suspect it had butter or soy margarine in it.

I think we're so used to having relapses that we automatically assume it's "Here we go again." Thank goodness we apparently were wrong this time.

Dear Sara
"I thought I was having a flare, but I'm only sick!"
Agree. The apparent incomprehensibility of this to anyone without MC shows why we can communicate so easily amongst ourselves....and why we need to.

Best, ant

Pat and Gloria,

I'm sooo relieved to read your posts - I seem to take it quite personally whenever someone here is having a hard time - strange, isn't it??? Guess that's what makes us a real family - we really and truly care about each other  . Fingers crossed that you both are "out of the woods" for now.

Love,
Kari

P.S. I haven't updated in a while for fear of "jinxing" things, but I can report that I'm doing quite well.

Kari, that is indeed very exciting, but I'm staying very calm about it, even though I do not believe in jinxing ;)

What a wonderful place to be, especially while anticipating a journey...

It's been over a week now and I still am having the water D. I don't know what happened but it is like 12 years ago when this first started. Except that it is not 20 times a day. I had a virus and the aches and pains went away but the D just doesn't get any better. I am being so careful with my diet. I am taking imodium but it doesn't thicken anything. Sounds like I a peeing when I have a BM. I have an appt with new GI on Wed. Keeping fingers crossed that he has miraculous ideas. I'm not holding my breath.

Pat,

I'm sorry to hear this. I don't doubt your dietary diligence for a moment, you have worked so hard to eliminate all food triggers. I hope your new GI helps. I'm guessing you've already taken steps to eliminate everything possible (supplements, meds, cosmetics...), at least on a temporary basis. I have had bouts of super-liquid D, but never for 12 days in a row. You must be very concerned (not to mention tired).

I bathed with baking soda instead of soap for a while when I was first sick - the fragrances of even natural soaps & cosmetics made me feel queasy when I was ill. It's not luxurious, but I found it soothing.

Sending you wishes for relief, and an answer (though relief is more important),

Thanks, Sara. Yes, I eliminated all supplements by mouth, not my hormone creams. I like to sleep. My pharmacist disagrees with Tex about Progesterone causing D. I have added them back in though. I need some kind of nutrition. They are Freedas so they are free of everything. I use unscented everything. I make my own laundry detergent and it is scent free too. I was doing pretty good on the leap diet and then I got that nasty virus. I just can't believe that I still have that. And yes I am worn out.
