Making yogurt

What would I use as a yogurt starter if I am going to be dairy free? I used to use Dannon plain yogurt and cultured my whole milk yogurt for 24 hours but now I am going to use coconut milk or rice milk to see if that helps. I continue to get flare ups. I was diagnosed with MC in 2003 and celiac in2006. Follow the scdiet but continue to have flare ups. Am now suspicious of the yogurt. I am "addicted" to yogurt now after all these years of eating it 2 x a day :)

I haven't tried the cultured products yet, but it's "on my list" (as my husband would say... except he doesn't actually have a list).

I'd use the plain for culture, and because most commercial products are too sweet for me.

When I first fixed my diet, I made breakfast, and my husband said... I guess if I were traveling in an exotic country, I'd think this was a fine breakfast. Sounds like you're already getting some insight into that feeling :smile:

Like you, I used to eat yogurt every day for lunch and was at a loss when I had to go DF.

I tried making rice yogurt - it didn't work. It separated into liquid and rice pulp and wouldn't mix together. I've never found a successful recipe on the web.

JoAnn, another member, tried making coconut yogurt and had some problems with the recipe. I don't believe she ever posted the recipe. I have found some recipes on the web for coconut yogurt, but I haven't tried them. I'd suggest you search for one before you try it. All of the yogurt recipes reported separation, but I recall that coconut was the most successful.

I've purchased ready-made Ricera rice yogurt and So Delicious coconut yogurt. I loved So Delicious Coconut yogurt, but they add carrageenan, a problem for me. Ricera rice yogurt isn't very tasty or sweet, but I really wanted my yogurt, so I ate it regardless. I no longer eat it, but I noticed that it contains locust bean gum, a potential problem.

I used to make my own coconut yogurt...but now I purchase a wonderful coconut yogurt made by Cocojune. I like the plain one with no added sugar, it is mild and richly creamy. You can add what you like to it :). Here's a ink if curious https://www.cocojune.co
