It's great to see that you're feeling better. Yes, erythritol is not our friend. It's a sugar alcohol. We can't digest sugar alcohols, so they pass right through our small intestine and ferment in the colon, where they can cause gas, bloating and D. I have a hunch that virtually all of us react to the sugar alcohols. I know for sure that I react to anything more than slight amounts of sorbitol, so it's pretty likely that I react to the other sugar alcohols also. I suspect that this is why we find it difficult to tolerate some fruits when we are recovering, because they contain significant amounts of sorbitol and other sugar alcohols.

And as Gabes mentioned, citric acid is a no-no during recovery for most of us. I still can't tolerate moderate amounts of citric acid, and I've been in remission for over 13 years now.

I will say I don't remember reading
there is just no one food
.... so thank you for reminding me that. Of course I WANT there to be one food...lol

I will never drink another thing with those weird sugars, I do remember Tex talking about these sugars in his books.

Do have any ideas for flavoring water ( besides lemon) something that would be safe ? I am not very good at drinking plain water.

I will go back to stevia- real stevia for my coffee, I have lots on hand.

So maybe my stomach was calm today from all the things I am staying away from.

I am missing 2 things the most, fresh grated Parmesan cheese ( so good on shrimp & pasta) and I miss my hard boiled egg in the morning. Other wise I don't miss anything, so that's pretty good huh !

Thanks Tex, I just got done re reading parts of your book and the sugar alcohols and fruit. Ok so no lemon in the water. So I am stuck with just plain water ?? No little trick ??? lol

You guys are amazing, you just have so much patience with us newbies, you repeat and repeat and when we don't get it, you just calmly repeat it all again.... Thank You for this !!

I use "safe" extracts to flavor my coffee, tea, and other beverages. Flavorganics has a number of extracts, including lemon, that you might want to check out. They are all organic and Kosher certified. The lemon extract just contains lemon oil, alcohol, and water, so no citric acid. The lemon oil is cold pressed, so shouldn't have any soy oil. I tried a few drops in water, and it imparts a nice lemon flavor without the tartness. So I didn't feel the need to add any sugar. The orange extract might be good to try too, for some variety. I am highly sensitive to soy, and they don't cause me any problems. But of course, we are all different in what we react to, so a careful testing of anything new is prudent.

That is a huge help Rosie, I have been looking on line all morning to see what is Low FODMAP and MC friendly that could I could add to water.

I am just not seeing me drinking plain water for the rest of my life. I just need a drop of something and this lemon oil seems ok. The 1st ingrd is Organic Alcohol, that is questionable...

What say ye Tx & Gabes ?

Maybe a teeny tiny amount of pure blueberries added to water ? Juice my own ?

The effects of things such as citric acid are dose dependent. IOW small amounts may be well-tolerated, but large amounts may cause the digestive system to light up the flashing neon sign that says "TILT". You might be Ok with small amounts of lemon or lime in water, as long as you don't overdo it.

Alcohol is a similar issue — it's effects are dose-dependent. Remember that alcohol is the only substance that is absorbed in the stomach (about 20 %), and because it requires no digestion, it goes straight into the blood. So small doses of alcohol usually don't remain in the digestive system long enough to cause direct digestive effects. Because alcohol is essentially a poison (at least that's the way that the body views and handles it), it's the liver's job to remove all of it as quickly as possible. The biggest risk with MC is increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut), which just happens to be the cause of all food sensitivities. Of course a big overdose of alcohol will have secondary effects that can cause D, but that would be way beyond what we're talking about here.

So whether or not the alcohol in that product would cause any problems depends on how much you would use. The fact that alcohol is the first ingredient is somewhat concerning, but whether it would matter probably hinges on how much of the product you would add to your water. It may be a negligible amount (as far as potential digestive system effects are concerned).

Great info Tex, and I just don't do well with alcohol and I for don't do well with erythritol. I will wait until I have this flare somewhat under better control before I do any flavoring in my water. So plain water it is for a while.

Yesterday was a pretty good day and bam today is awful in regards to WD. This is a flipping nightmare ! Maybe when I get the soy out of my TPN ( and I am getting it out- all of it- baby steps with the doctors on this ) I am living on white rice and TPN and plain water.... but hey I woke up today, so there is always that ! lol

Pre MC and even more so since multiple health issues I have been ok with plain water.

pre MC i would have 1- 2 litres per day (up to half a gallon)
nowadays especially in summer I would have at least 3 litres per day (3/4 gallon)

long story short, find what works for you.

I am very keen to hear how the poop situation is with soy free feed bag and no citric acid, alcohol sugars etc...

Ha I am very keen to know too !


Can't start a limited about of soy till next week as they already made up the very $$$ bags of TPN. Next week they will allow me to have 2 days free of soy and then I will tell them how much better I felt without the soy and get it cut completely. So I am at least 2 weeks from getting this accomplished.

Like you, I will stick to plain water, I will get to where I enjoy it, I usually do just fine with changes in time.

it can take 21 days to adjust to a new habit, so hang in there for a couple of weeks.
You have made some big changes in the past week so you are doing grand!

and I just had another thought, the removal of the soy and these other triggers may be enough to calm the gut, you may not need lots of cholestryamine, especially when you get the Vit D3 level up.

Something of note, quite a few food sources of citric acid are made from mold.
MC'ers are not the only ones that struggle to tolerate it, for those with Chronic Inflammation /Multiple Chemical Sensitivities/Lyme etc avoiding citric acid is very important.

Hey Gabes or Tex, why when I am having really bad WD and 15 trips to the bathroom is my reflux SO BAD ?
My reflux is OVER the TOP today.

I told my GI wizard ( not ) 2 weeks ago before the dx of MC came in - that my reflux which was mighty bad before the WD, became almost unbearale when the WD started.

Man I am refluxing today something awful :newshocked: and I notice it is always over the top like this when the WD is bad.
Any ideas, and what helps ? ( I have never taken PPI's and would never) I can't have any coffee today. :cry:
