Yeah, I also can't imagine not washing, which is why I'm still on the fence on this. I've gone through periods of mild seborrheic dermatitis that related to stress and trauma, that I don't have now, so I have no real excuse for not trying this now. My scalp has literally been a sea of white crust at times. I don't know if stress is a current factor with you now, but concurrent w/that was my skin peeling off my hands and feet.
I was dealing with childhood issues at the time, spurred by another suicide in my family, and I know that is likely not the norm for most.
Hair loss???

I'm so glad that someone wrote about Hair Loss. Just after my
first flare up with LC last year, it was about the 3rd month I noticed
my hair not shedding but I was rapidly losing it. I have always shedded
a little bit but this was dramatically different. This went on for about 3 months
then it stopped. My hair was just getting healther and I had another flare up
in June. This time I noticed the hair loss much sooner. I have straight and
very fine hair and can't afford to lose much more.
I know that Tex said it could be Thyroid related. I am on thryoid medication
and only noticed this after I have had a flare up with LC.
Has anyone found a really good shampoo and conditioner? What about
taking any suppliments? I am afraid to take anything but my prescriptions.
Thanks,
Tanya

I may be fooling myself, but I think taking B-complex which includes Biotin may be helping me. I definitely think we are prone to B-complex deficiencies on the GF diet and when we have MC. But I'm intrigued by the fact that your hair loss got worse during the flare. IMHO, i wonder if it could be:
1) nutrient deficiencies because you're not absorbing what you need during a flare (including biotin and zinc)
2) if you have thyroid issues, thyroid imbalances during a flare
or, worst case scenario
3) if MC is a "mild" autoimmune disease, you might expect some MC sufferers to also have "mild" alopecia areata, an autoimmune form of hairloss.
I personally have many autoantibodies of unknown significance so far, so I wouldn't be surprised by an attack on my hair follicles :(
I've read a few natural suggestions for dealing with it:
For alopecia areata
"•Biotin (300 mcg per day) and trace minerals, such as those found in blue-green algae (2 - 6 tablets per day), may promote hair growth. Biotin and zinc aspartate have been used to treat alopecia areata in children. However, there is no evidence that biotin will help if you are already getting enough biotin in your diet. Biotin is found in chard, romaine lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes.
•Aromatherapy -- One study found that massaging the scalp with a combination of several essential oils improved hair growth. The oils used were lavender, rosemary, thyme, and cedarwood. Because essential oils can be toxic, they are mixed with a “carrier” oil -- in this case, jojoba or grapeseed oil -- before applying to skin. Add 3 - 6 drops of essential oil to 1 tbs. of jojoba or grapeseed oil. Massage into scalp daily.
Massage
Therapeutic massage increases circulation (helping bring more blood to the scalp) and reduces stress. Scalp massage using essential oils of rosemary, lavender, thyme, and cedarwood may help increase circulation (see Herbs)."
Of course if I try to massage, I just get more hairloss all at once!!
