Preparation for Hawaii Trip

Hi Gloria,
Your luggage items sound like mine now. I always carry on, so now that I am cramming food into my luggage, I have virtually no room for anything else except my camera gear.
My mom has a friend who sent me a gluten free care package and I took all of those items with me last week during my travels through North and South Carolina.
It was comforting to know I had some safe food with me. One of the items is Rudi's bread. It is awesome. You should try it.
Have fun in Hawaii. My wife and I were in Maui in May. We spent a day in Waikiki. The fresh mango tea was my favorite. But that could be harmful to us in hindsight. The long plane trip over was uneventful for me (pre-diagnosis) as I formerly would take a lomotil and an ambien to survive the long hauls (or drink red wine until I fell asleep :) . It's funny how paranoid I have become of getting sick on an airplane, and to this date (knock on a ton of wood), I have "survived" all my flying. I am very sick of it, but such is my life for now.

Rich

Gloria, I hope you have a wonderful time. With all your preparations and your realistic, optimistic attitude, I'm sure everything will work out. I'm envious because I lost out on a trip to Hawaii the year I was diagnosed with mc. Even though I'm doing well, I'm not sure my confidence level is ready for it yet. I'm sure one day I'll get there. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers, again have a wonderful vacation. Love JoAnn

Hi Gloria,
By the time you read this, you'll be in Hawaii, so I hope that everything is going smoothly, and according to plan.
I hope the weather is nice there - it's been pretty cold here in Texas, the past few days and nights.

We're in Hawaii!!
Hello everyone,
We made it to Hawaii without any problems.
As you know, I was pretty concerned about how I was going to eat two meals over the duration of the 12-hour flight. The flight went well and I was able to eat my turkey sandwich and corn chips for lunch. I brought a container containing Clear Jel and sugar, mixed them together with almond milk during lunch, and put it back in my cooler pack. Wahla! I had instant pudding which set up by dinner. Security let my frozen broccoli and my cool pac through and my ham slices stayed cold until dinner. The rice was cold, but I spiffed it up by eating it with the instant pudding, so it was like eating rice pudding. I also ate a rice cake with almond butter and corn muffin for snacks. I didn't get hungry at all.
Our hotel/condominium room is very nice. The kitchen has adequate cookware and dinnerware. There wasn't any blender, so I mentioned it to the desk and they had one here by the time we returned from the supermarket. I made almond milk and pudding this evening.
Planning certainly helps! We were able to catch the right busses to and from the Safeway store without any problem. I used Google Maps and the To: From: feature to find the bus routes we needed. How did we ever manage before without the Internet? We used our carry-on suitcases for the groceries. When we finally went to bed, it was 1:30 a.m. Chicago time; 8:30 p.m. here. I went 2 days before I had a BM. That's a real good sign that I'm doing well. Our seats on the plane were right next to the bathroom, too. I'm glad I made a seat cushion; it gave me the extra padding I needed for the long flight.
I was able to buy a leg of lamb, turkey, and pork chops at Safeway last night. I cooked the leg of lamb this morning and was able to eat it with tortillas for lunch. Tomorrow I'll be making the turkey. They were on sale at Safeway's for only $5 for one up to 16 lbs. That offset the cost of the lamb, which was $27(!) Everything is more expensive here. We spent $170 at the grocery store for one week of groceries. When we were at the store last night, DH suddenly looked at me and said "I guess we're going to be eating in the hotel every meal." It must not have dawned on him until then. I feel pretty bad about it, but it's what I have to do right now. I had lamb with rice for dinner and he had pigs in blankets. Perhaps we'll be able to find a place to eat that serves pork. But every restaurant is expensive. One restaurant offered lamb chops for $28.95. I think that even if I could eat out, I'd still be eating a lot of meals in the hotel. I am easily able to manage my diet restrictions. Being in an English-speaking area with familiar grocery stores is a big help.
We went to church today. The grounds are beautiful. There is a long reflection pool surrounded by flowers and a huge Banyan tree on the property. When the service was over, everyone went outside to go to their other meetings. The other meeting rooms along with Sunday School, library, Bishop's office, restrooms, etc. surrounded a courtyard and each had it's own outside entrance, similar to a hotel. We couldn't believe it! There is no need to protect things from the elements, other than rain.
We can see the ocean with the surfers and swimmers at Waikiki beach from our balcony. Plus we can see the zoo and Diamond Head mountain to the east, which gives us a picturesque view of the natural green landscape.
DH and I are both sleepy and it's only 7:26 p.m. It will take a few days to adjust to the new time. It gets dark here by 7 p.m. The weather is beautiful, of course. We'll be going to the beach tomorrow. We are having a great time!

Gloria, I'm so happy you're having a wonderful trip. I wish I could take you along with me when I travel and then I probably wouldn't worry a bit. Thanks for posting the details as it helps all of us to plan better when we travel. Continue having a wonderful time, JoAnn

Hi Gloria!
Wonderful update! You are proof that there IS life after an MC/ double DQ1 diagnosis! Way to go!
Maybe DH could get room service or carryout for himself one evening to feel as if he is eating out.
Enjoy yourselves thoroughly!
Love,
Polly

Gloria,
Thank you so much for sharing your Hawaii experience with all of us in so much detail. It certainly is very encouraging to hear that when well prepared, it is possible to have a relaxed, wonderful vacation even when struggling with MC. I'm glad you're able to stick to your guns about not eating out. Your DH will also benefit from your resolve, as he will not have to vicariously deal with your problems if a flare erupts.
Love the sound of the views from your balcony - this means you can enjoy your meals in a location which is probably better than most of the restaurants :). I'm envisioning you going out on your balcony with your morning cup of coffee or tea and soaking up the atmosphere :).
Wishing you all the best and lots of fun,
Kari

Gloria,
So glad to hear your trip is going well and you are enjoying yourself. You are definitlely an inspiration to us!
Possibly hubby can get some take out and you can pack your lucnh and you could go picnic somewhere. We have done that many times. It might be good to get out of the room and enjoy different scenery while eating.
Look forward to hearing about your trip. Hawaii is on the radar for us next year, if all goes as planned.
