Yes, you're correct. Not everyone with MC has a malabsorption issue, (it apparently depends on whether or not our small intestine is involved), but for many of us, it seems to be a serious problem. A fecal fat test at Enterolab showed that I still had a slight amount of residual damage to my gut, over 3 years after I adopted the GF diet. IOW, the damage can be very slow to heal, so we can run short of many vitamins and various other nutrients.Julie wrote:From what I read it's malabsorption caused by gluten sensitivity that contributes to bone density problems. During those 3 years, I assumed that since I was in remission, I didn't need to take vitamins, but somewhere along the line, I developed peripheral neuropathy, apparently due to gluten crossing the blood/brain barrier, and a deficiency of vitamin B-12, and possibly folic acid, (due to the lingering malabsorption problem), because I wasn't taking vitamins regularly, (at least not at first).
