For the number of people known to have food sensitivities, there's got to be just as many people who either do not know, do not disuss or just want to know what may be causing health issues.
Celebreties are discussing such health issues. Elisabeth Hasslebeck on The View is celiac and has been promoting her GF cook book recently on other talk/cooking shows. I read Mike McCready with Pearl Jam also has colitis. While I believe politics (poli = many; tics = blood suckers) could be an issue, I'm optimistic that some would support, especially if you could identify those with sensitivities in their family. Perhaps Enterolab might jump on board with this.
I've been wanting to have my mother tested for GI, and getting blood lab okayed will be the easy part. Laying the groundwork to discuss Enterolab with her Dr. But then I ask myself what if she is GI? Nursing homes don't do sensitivity meal preparation. I can only wonder what type of health improvements facilities would see if each patient was tested for sensitivities and provided the appropriate diet.
Robin - Some of the prepackaged GF food actually state that product is processed in GF facility. I keep some prepackaged GF's for times when I have physical difficulty cooking. I've tried several brands and researched the net for GF brands. I always feel safe and have the best luck with Bob's Red Mill brand, and they do have a separate facility for GF processing. They also have a good selection online.
Stanz - Maybe the TV show could present a tour of a processing facility for sensitivity products as an educational tool. YOU CAN GET YOUR LIFE BACK might be a name consideration and may generate interest.
In doing an episode for example, "A Day (or Week) With MC" or "Living With MC," with a follow-up toward the end of the episode detailing results after two weeks, 6 months, etc after diet change.
Organic farmers would be a good interview; findings in genetically modified crops; seeds from nonhybrid food plants; and the testing of combined food additives vs singly testing.

I talked to Adam. His take is that Food Detectives is a great name, and the idea is good. He thinks Current is the place to pitch it. The name is the hook.
He says the program needs to be about FOOD. It's a great idea and the name, Connie, is terrific. It makes you want to find out.
If this is seen as a viewer drawer I don't see why it couldn't be pitched to the Food Network? They are only interested in the money that comes in, and they might be prepared to do it.
We can't use SICKNESS as the subject for food detectives. We need FOOD to be that. Then the story would be about investigating FOOD. What it is, where it comes from, what it does, how we developed, what we need in our bodies to make them run and why.
Then have a series of segments on sensitivities:
gluten - history and so forth
soy - all sources and what it's in
Corn - ditto
eggs - ditto
dairy - ditto
All grains - ditto
How all the above are processed, and why.
How to read labels and understand them.
What is "natural" and organic. What allows foods to be labelled that way, and how it's misleading.
Then the different forms of diet and how they affect us.
Veggie,
vegan,
Atkins
Paleo and show how those are similar
And so on

Well, I'm hopeful, Lesley, and glad that Adam thinks it might work. I don't know anything about Current, what is that? My biggest fear is that networks run on sponsor $ and if you're broadcasting stuff that threatens any of their bottom lines, they will kill you to survive and this includes drug companies and food industry, as well as insurance companies who surely must have found the formula to get rich by denying us compensation for what we should be insured for.
I'm trying to be hopeful, I guess the first stop should be my local PBS station where I at least have a few contacts who know me professionally from working there.

Current TV is Al gore's station. Keith Olbermann went into it with Gore, and they are developing programing. They are supposed to be able to say anything they like on there, but since they are funded by advertisers I very much doubt that it's as free as they would like us to believe.
Adam has a big meeting this week, but when it's over I can ask him to help us prepare a pitch, and then we can go for it.
