Jean, I was reading through Chris Kresser's site and chuckled at this exchange:
Chris Kresser: Sure, yeah, so it’s been observed for quite some time that when people consume more ice cream, there’s an increase in shark attacks. So, obviously that means that eating ice cream increases your risk of getting attacked by a shark. Right, Mat?

Mat Lalonde: Of course! Probably you eat too much ice cream, and then you drown in the sea, and they you move around a lot, and the sharks are attracted to you, and your blood tastes sweet.

Chris Kresser: Right. So maybe there’s another explanation?

Mat Lalonde: Maybe it’s because the temperature is rising.

Chris Kresser: Uh-huh…

Steve Wright: No way! No way!

Chris Kresser: So the temperature goes up, and more people go in the water, and then more people get attacked by sharks.

Mat Lalonde: That’s correct. And when the temperature goes up, there’s also more people that eat ice cream because it’s cold and it’s yummy.

Chris Kresser: Ahhh. So, yes, this is a perfect example of why we have to be careful, assuming that correlation equals causation, which we’ve talked about, of course, many times on this show.

Deb,

I listened to that whole podcast. Well worth it for those who are trying to follow a paleo diet. It gives a less fundamentalist approach to paleo, which is Kresser's approach in general. I too was struck by that exchange. It puts the point across really well.

:iagree: It's like the fact that 100% of us who sleep will die. Therefore, obviously sleeping causes dying.

Jean, I had forgotten that you have been eating basically paleo for so many years. Even though your system fussed at the dairy, just think how much healthier you are overall. I will think of you when I am tempted to weather the upset from eating rice or corn like I did a couple of nights ago. The ginger snaps were good, but not worth the consequences that kept me up for a while.

I was pleased to find all his articles on thyroid, as I'm currently researching info on mine. Here's an interesting one on thyroid and gluten.

Wow, you guys are a wealth of information!!

Unfortunately, none of the Paleo books are available at my library, but I will check the bookstores tomorrow. Tex, I didn't know for sure about legumes, but it seemed like they probably shouldn't be on the diet. So other than the fruits and nuts, I could do it. (I'm still hoping that once things settle down I can test some of those one at a time and see if there are some I can still eat.) I'm almost there anyway--no dairy, no grains, no potatoes, no legumes!

Gloria--I knew you were still doing some grains...sounds like the only grains you can tolerate are the ones I can't! Potato starch is definitely out for me, which makes GF baking a real chore, and the corn is still on my suspect list. I guess I will have to eat just one of the GF flours at some point and see what it does to me. I made the "Nutty Pie Crust" recipe with almond flour and got really bloated, and most nuts haven't set well anyway, so I've been avoiding that one. It's just hard to know what I'm reacting to in a recipe anymore.

Tex--maybe I'm one of those people who developed a sensitivity after eating so much rice at the beginning? I haven't had it as much in recent months because I suspected it, but there again, it's hard to know, especially when the symptoms are vague. I'm keeping a food diary again and trying not to eat multiple-ingredient foods for awhile so I can track down what's bothering me.

Day two of my little mini-flare...

Cynthia, can you eat sweet potatoes? Cooked carrots? Both are delicious roasted and are high in carbohydrates. They are a staple of my diet ( I also am not good with white potatoes)

Leah,

Yes, I can still do both sweet potatoes and carrots! Yay! I use carrots a lot in my stir fry. And I LOVE sweet potato latkes, although it's harder to get them to stick together than regular potatoes. I remember years ago, when I was doing South Beach, that carrots were on the no-no list for the first 2 weeks because of their higher carb content...I had forgotten about that. Thanks for reminding me!
