It's official, my MIL has Mast Cell Activation Disease of the skin and the colon. She actually knew about the skin from a previous biopsy for her chronic urticaria years ago, but she never made the connection to her gut symptoms - until I pointed it out. Now her doctor is busily researching on her behalf, and the hospital is planning a Contining Education class about it. She had elevated mast cells, but apparently not enough for a ME diagnosis, so is that why it falls under MCAD?

So far they've only told her to take Zantac. She takes Allegra or Zyrtec for seasonal allergies or when her hives return. She's committed to being more careful about gluten, and increasing her vegetable intake, but she said all the veggies are causing lots of gas. She also complains of pencil-thin stools. Are any of these related to MCAD? Is the gluten sensitivity caused by MCAD or does she need to address other causes like gut dysbiosis, etc like the rest of us?

She also has diverticulosis, so she is avoiding certain fruits and seeds. Didn't they debunk this myth recently? Seeds should only be avoided in active diverticulitis?

Should I be telling her to follow a low histamine diet?
