Hi Ian,

IMO, your doctors are lost. That high initial reading almost surely is a result of very poor digestion caused by the fact that you are in the middle of a gluten challenge. IOW, as long as you are eating gluten, you will be unable to properly digest most foods, and so your intestines will always have sugars (carbs) fermenting in them, producing hydrogen or methane gas (fasting does not get around a fermentation problem, because fermentation is a relative slow process that can take days to be completed). Therefore, you are producing gas even before the additional sugar is administered for the test, because you are already experiencing fermentation (because of the poor digestion caused by the gluten challenge).
