Leah, I repeated what 23andme reported re my genotype.
"Primary immune deficiencies are a group of disorders in which genetic defects impair the immune system's ability to function at normal levels. Although not everyone with a primary immune deficiency experiences health problems, many with the condition face increased susceptibility to infection. For these individuals, the infections may become chronic or especially severe. Selective IgA deficiency is characterized by especially low levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA), an antibody that helps protect the parts of our bodies that come in contact with the outside world - our mouth, nose and throat, eyes, digestive tract, etc. - from harmful pathogens. About one person in 500 is affected, making it one of the most common primary immune deficiency diseases.

This variant is located in the HLA region of the genome, which contains many genes that play important roles in the immune system, and has also been associated with risk for celiac disease and SLE."
Tex can probably clarify this for you. I'm just repeating what is in my report.

The members of this board seem to have a significantly higher risk of having selective IgA deficiency than someone in the general population. Based on our total membership, that prevalence appears to be about 1 in 300, or higher. I'm not sure if that's because people who have MC are more likely to have selective IgA deficiency, or if it means that people who have selective IgA deficiency are more prone to develop MC than someone in the general population.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thank you, Tex. It is important to remember that these genetic tests tell you what is there, not what is actually operational in your body. They test three genotypes for selective IgA deficiency. You can have slightly or substantially higher odds, typical odds or greatly lower odds of the deficiency. Of the three tested, I had substantially higher odds in one of the three genotypes and typical odds in the other two.
