Ant,
It is great hearing from you and my since sympathy on the passing of your mother. Some of us have truly become the older generation. Good luck on the book and understand the pulling into a shell. I am kind of there right now my self - just too many family issues in a very, very small family.
Love, Maggie

Hey Ant,
I add my voice to the others re: Your mother. And that I'm glad to see you. and glad to hear you are doing well.
Both my parents died with all faculties intact, but as a geriatric OT I have worked with MANY Alzheimer's patients and know how hard it is to handle the ongoing grief.
I have gone from osteopenia to osteoporosis, and fallen enough times catastrophically to warrant my using a walker. I do not have celiacs, but have serious balance issues.
Take care. Here's hoping you pop in a little more than once a year

Dear Paula, Carol, Martha, Maggie and Lesley,
Many thanks for your kind and sympathetic words. It is quite something to post after a year and be immediately surrounded by such warmth.
Dear Marcia,
Your blog looks very good. I am now leaning towards using wordpress.com (rather than the more difficult to use wordpress.org) but will buy the option to use one's own url address.
Dear Tex,
I recall that while you were writing your book you had occasionally to refrain from posting some things on PP prior to publishing the book due to copyright or some other IP reasons. Do I have that right? I am sure I will have to understand more about the legal niceties of blogging and book publishing as I move forward with my new project.
Also, I only just took in what you wrote about Metanx. I will ask my doc if he can prescribe it next time I see him. Many thanks for the information.
Best wishes, Ant

Ant,
As I understand it, the risk involves being accused of self-plagiarism (as ridiculous as that concept might seem), if one publishes one's own material after it has already appeared in a public venue. I would assume that properly citing the prior-published material would satisfy any legal requirements, and I tried to do that whenever it seemed appropriate. Of course, if everything in a book has been previously published, that can possibly diminish the value of the book, but that would depend on the subject matter of the book, obviously. For example, it's certainly possible (and practical) to publish a book about the contents of a blog, so prior publishing does not preempt any book options.
My feeling is that the strictness with which self-plagiarism issues might be interpreted may be subordinate to whether or not one actually files for copyright protection with one or more government copyright offices. In the U. S. for example, copyright protection is automatically granted by the inclusion of that little copyright symbol on the copyright page of a book, and that protection is supposedly assumed to be in effect worldwide. However, if litigation should ever arise, one has stronger legal protection if a copyright is applied for and granted by the U. S. Copyright Office, because certain details concerning the originality of text, photos, etc. of the book have to be certified prior to the granting of an official government copyright. And this protection supposedly extends worldwide. I have a hunch that even government-sponsored protection might not mean much in some foreign countries, however. LOL. And obviously, if "official" copyright status is desired, the application would have to be made to the appropriate government office in the country in which the book will be published. I have no idea what the requirements might be in other countries, but they should be similar.
The bottom line though, is that if you are going to write a book about a blog, then there should certainly be no problem with blogging whatever you want (within reasonable limits, of course. LOL), and then cherry-picking parts of it for inclusion in a book at some point later.
You're most welcome, and good luck with your new ventures.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
