Thanks for the advise, Gabes. I think I will increase again and see what happens until I have my 23 & Me results.

Is too much Betaine detrimental to your stomach??? That's why I scaled back on it, but I didn't consider the other factors going on in me like the methylation cycle issues I possible have....

Maybe wait till we get your 23andme results and we have more insight...

Thus far between the hair analysis and 23andme results, every supp Identified I should have, I have tolerated no issues... Which tells me my body needed them!!!

Gabes..I was up to 2,500+ units of betaine HCL at one time with no signs of burning stomach etc...and that scared me...it was such a high dosage...so, I scaled back...I might play with again until my results are in...

As healing of the small intestine progresses, the ability to produce the various enzymes is restored in the reverse order in which they were lost (for example, lactase is lost first, so the ability to produce that enzyme is restored last. That means that after the ability to digest lactose is back, one's gut has healed about all that it is going to heal. IOW, enzyme production is not always completely restored back to the original capacity, but it should be close enough for all practical purposes.

If you have no obnoxious fecal stool odor, that implies that your digestion is relatively good. Or it could mean that the probiotic bacteria are preempting the production of noxious gases by other bacteria, by beating them to the nutrients and doing a "cleaner" job of breaking down (fermenting) the available nutrients.

At any rate, I'm guessing that probiotic bacteria produce a certain amount of gas. Don't they? Bacteria have to ferment food, in order to survive, and that almost always produces gas as a byproduct.

Yes it is. The procedure for determining a correct dose involves increasing the dose by 1 pill each meal, until a warm feeling develops in the stomach within about 10 minutes after taking it. That signals a proper dose. If a burning sensation is felt, instead of a warm feeling, then the dose should be backed off by 1 pill.

Of course this is all approximate, since the dose mostly depends on the amount of protein in a meal. Dosages may have to be established independently for each meal of the day, or based on the approximate amount of protein in a meal.

If I remember correctly, one members was taking more than twice that amount. Of course the amount will depend on how much you eat at any given meal.

Everybody in my family who drink milk, have a lot of gas. I have given up trying to tell them why they have a lot of gas.

I get gas problems after accidents with lactose intake, and if I have eaten food with sugar.

I think our gut bacteria have a "rock'n roll party" down there, whenever we ingest sugar and lactose/casein.

Lilja,
I have been dairy free for a couple of years. I cook all my own food, so, I'm not ingesting anything that I have food intolerances to. :(

Tex,
Why does this whole process start mid afternoon each day and continue until morning, when I have a bowel movement?
I feel fine for about 6-8 hours each day, then It all starts.... 😒
By morning though I'm worn out from the whole process the evening & night before and my energy level is low.
I keep wondering if it's food related? I'm still very strict with my diet of game meats & turkey, noncruciferous veggies, no sugar, etc.
I have added some green plaintain to my breakfast routine. I tried smoothies a couple of times to get enzymes from my food, too. I still seem to have to eat cooked veggies exclusively. 😞

Linda,

Are there any carbs in your breakfast? If not, I'm guessing that you're not quite digesting all of the meat in your breakfast. Another way to view that would be to say that maybe it's taking too long to digest all of it.

Tex,

That's a thought....I have been eating 2 small pancakes made of coconut flour or plaintain or coconut & pecans. They are not high in carbs. I have not been eating meat at breakfast because I have so few choices in meat that I was tired of it. Maybe I need to go back to a little meat?
I eat slowly & chew well.
Maybe it's the veggies at lunch?

UPDATE...I stopped eating vegetables at lunch, and tried a white potato (small, because it's #1 on Enterolab) with my meat for dinner one day, and 4 small slices of cooked zucchini with my meat for dinner last night. I increased my betaine HCL to about 600 units. And the result? Drastically reduced gas and rolling and noises!

I guess it's the fiber in the veggies, or carbs????

But, my question is...what does this mean? Is it that my gut is still inflamed, and I need to be patient? I'd hate to think of life without veggies.
I don't eat cruciferous veggies....and I even wilt my lettuce.

Any insights?

Thanks!
Linda :)

You're eating lettuce? I reacted so reliably to lettuce that it was probably 5 or 6 years after I reached remission that I got up the nerve to try lettuce again. Lettuce is one of the most MC-unfriendly veggies available, IMO. But YMMV, of course.

Maybe the increased betaine HCL made the difference. 600 mg is really a minimal dose. The tablets I used had 650 mg each, and that was considered a starting (minimal) dose.

Tex,

I've been eating greens...like swiss chard, escarole, endive etc. Recently I added red leaf lettuce. I just felt so unhealthy only eating squashes....I also tried sunflower seed sprouts.

Because of my limitations due to food intolerances, just eating a little cucumber, fennel, & carrot lightly steamed was thrilling...but now I just don't know.....

Linda,

I was referring to iceberg lettuce of course. Presumably red leaf lettuce may be much safer. It appears that many of us can handle Romain lettuce even though iceberg is a major problem.

Maybe the fiber content of some of those vegetables is adding up to too large a number for your current stage of healing. Isn't fennel considered a high-fiber food? Fennel (and some of the others) contain insoluble fiber, and that could be the problem.

Woo hoo for progress/improvement!!

I had very small serve of raw silverbeet spinach and strawberry salad the other day - no major issues.

looking at what Zizzle's practitioner suggested for leaky gut healing, (new post today) 2 of the main ingredients are Vit E, glutamine, I have been doing high doses of Vit E (soy free) to clear toxins etc. That with the Vit C, Mag, Zinc, glutamine and other amino acids/B's etc and fixing methylation cycle, maybe healing is 'limited' while there are other deficiencies.

Tex,

That's odd about MCers handling romaine over iceberg lettuce! I hadn't heard that.

I will try to add back one veggie at a time. It does to me that too many veggies was overloading my daily fiber intake. And, maybe just 1 veggie with each meal instead of many.

I cut back on my probiotic, too....I need to take that more slowly.....

Gabes,

I agree. Until I see where my homocysteine levels are etc, I won't know how to help my body with the healing.

Just waiting on those 23 & Me results!

Just put a new post up with another report option from your 23andme results. It duplicates some of the geneticgenie info, but provided some key gene mutations and referencing that I can do further research.

the reports are not layperson friendly.... but the website does list quite a few practitioners, and I was thinking of you as I reviewed them. Once we get your 23andme results and run all the reports, maybe a one off session with one of these practitioners will provide you with the - priority supplements and dosage and the secondary supplements and dosage that you need. it sucks we have to pay, but a few hundred dollars is worth it for healing and wellness!!
I do not want to repeat the 2 years of hell I went through before I did all this!! it feels great to have some root cause answers, solutions and see noticeable progress!
In the last 10 months i have spent about $600 on testing and good quality practitioner advice.
(and done a sh**te load of research and reading on my own!!)
