Thanks everyone, for your responses.

Jean, thinking back I believe his exact words were, "I read your book and I agree with every word of it.", so presumably that would mean that he also recognizes the validity of the EnteroLab tests. But I'll try to remember to ask him at the next appointment.

Donna, he seemed so enthusiastic about it that I believe he probably would be willing to agree to some sort of endorsement. But I didn't realize there would be a next edition. And I suppose making this thread a sticky in the Welcome to Newbies section might not be a bad idea. Thanks.

Summer, I didn't even realize that I was writing a book on preventing Alzheimers/Dementia. I'm not sure there's enough information to fill a book, but I do have a theory (supported by recent medical research references) about how Alzheimer's and non-Alzheimer's dementia can be prevented.

Blueberry — nope, no autograph request. The copy he has may be autographed, though. I gave a copy to his PA, who passed it on. It might have been autographed. I don't recall. I'm lucky to remember what I did yesterday, let alone things that happened 2 years ago.

Oh no! Is this a post from Tex in praise of a doc? I am gobsmacked! (giggle). Your experience proves again what we know - that general "docs" are far more open to new ideas that go against the status quo than are the specialists.

One thing to keep in mind......you have been studying/researching MC now for many years, not to mention the fact that you are privy to all of the great info here on this Board about what works (from the horses' mouths) and have pulled it all together in a excellent book. You are truly an expert in this disease. The GI docs out there do not have this kind of info available to them. It is not in their textbooks (which are already at least 5-10 years outdated by the time they are published), and not in their continuing ed. presentations. They will undoubtedly hear nothing about MC from their drug reps, unless it is a company that makes one of the few MC drugs, and even then, diet would likely not be mentioned. If they refer their patients to a nutritionist for dietary help, the nutritionist will most likely not understand MC or provide accurate info. So, the GI docs are kind of in a vacuum. Even if they are actively looking for new info on MC, they will not find it in their usual resources. I doubt that many have the time or inclination to look for info from online support groups, and of course, we know that most online groups lack the kind of info and insight that ours does. And, if a GI doc DID come onboard here and saw some of the negativity toward him/his colleagues, I don't think he would stay around for long. LOL.

What I am saying is that you, Tex, are the MC expert and not the GI docs - and it is not their fault necessarily.

The question is - how do we get your info into the heads of the GI docs? I do like the idea that each of us can start by giving a copy of your book to their GI docs.

Love,

Polly

Congratulations, Tex!
Good news for your future with your 'new' doctor.
Last week I showed your book to my GI.
He was interested in it and I lend it to him.
If I intrprete al the messages well, I have to conclude that your book is becoming famous all over the world!
Good news for all of us!

Polly,

I appreciate your kind words, but the truth is, I feel more like a student of the disease than an expert. And I'll bet that you and many others here who know so much more about the disease than our gastroenterologists probably also feel more like students than experts, as we continue to push the envelope to learn more about the disease and its treatment, and to spread the word against (as you have pointed out) extremely tough odds.

But you, dear friend, are at least a level or 2 above the category of awesome, because despite your medical credentials (and the restrictions and liabilities that come with them), you continue to put up with us, and you so generously guide us and help us to learn more about the disease. The value of that cannot be overstated. You're the best.

But I fully agree with you that the deck is stacked against GI specialists with regard to improving their understanding of the disease. It's a bit like a bad dream involving a runaway train, and no way to slow it down, let alone turn it around.

It's a shame that we can't just set up a website for GI specialists, where they could learn (without fear of criticism ) the real world facts about the disease, but as you so articulately pointed out, that raises the old question, "What if you threw a party and nobody came?" :sigh:

Love,
Tex

Brandy,

I have to admit that topic does interest me. I'm not sure I could do it justice, but I'm thinking about it. Thanks.

Sonja,

Thank you for showing the book to your specialist. If he was willing to at least look at it, that's very encouraging.

Tex,

The only doc I had an honest conversation with about MC was my podiatrist! We were chatting about my general health, and he told me his son was celiac and followed the paleo diet...we talked for 1/2 hour, and he really did understand what I go through with food sensitivities....especially after he visited with his son & family over the holiday and saw how rigid their lives had to be to stay well...it was a refreshing visit!

Congratulations Tex!

It must feel great as an author- AND as a patient too, that you, a person with a tested relationship with the medical community, know that you and your Dr. on on the same 278 pages... must be very comforting.

I took your book with me to my last Dr. appt. Of course she couldn't read it- but she did see the actual bound pages. I hope she gets it and reads it.

I'm so happy to hear that you met with a physician who understands MC appreciates your work. You give so much to others, a boatload and a half of affirmation is in order. :thanks:

Like I said in one of my posts being new to-day. It was meant for me to meet this retired gentlemen Doctor. In place of taking my Drs place while she was on vacation. He understood all I said. He even phoned me to tell me He got in-touch with my Specialsit.

So he said my Specialist wanted me to go now on Pep-to. I refuse I told this doctor. After what Imodium did. No thanks. So between this Dr and I agreeing who has been around the block many times in his life. I told him I applaud him. He was very graceful and said to me Thank you. Why not give credit where it belongs. I took his advise and doing the suggestions he said and doing the limitations of food. Plus water as I was not a drinker of water really as he requested and fiber cereal which I really never liked.

So you must be on cloud 9 with your doctor . I sure would be.

Congrats Tex. Will you see him again or won't see him till say a medical in a year. Seeing your a writer. Your pretty well healed.

Yet you never know what is around the corner to meet him again .[/i]

Hi Carol Ann,

Welcome to our Internet family. Yes, I was very fortunate to find a physician (especially locally) who listens and seems to be very understanding. I have an appointment to see him in a couple of months to follow up on a change he recommended for my thyroid treatment (we cut the supplement in half, and it seems to be working well). Otherwise I see him about twice a year, if everything is OK.

Yes, I have been in remission for over 10 years now, except for a couple of minor flares that didn't last long. I had a reaction last fall that was caused by the passing of a couple of kidney stones. Fortunately it only lasted for a few days.
