In the UK we are not allowed to use rain water, it's against the ?law and there is a fine attached for guilty parties. This government policy to protect water companies incomes.
Our water consumption for the size of our property was deemed too low. A representative knocked on my door one day to quizz me about my water usage and seemed convinced we were bypassing the meter. He checked the meter which is on the shared driveway and I was requested to turn the taps on in the house so he could check the meter was working. Cheeky b------d. I told him we lived in SA for a number of years and learned to respect and not waste water as it's a finite resource on our planet. Our SA gardens were watered from four large rain water tanks. We lived through droughts when severe water restrictions were enforced and our toilet cisterns had a resident brick to limit the water that was flushed. All dripping taps were fixed etc. huge fines were sent to those who disregarded the hosepipe ban and water restrictions.
I would love nothing more than to have borehole and be allowed to use the water. We have for many years bought still spring water for cooking and drinking because many of the water mains to old houses like ours are still lead pipes from the 19th C. Off to buy Herb Paste.

Yes, as someone who rents, and can only afford older properties, most places i live have/had copper pipes (not good when one of my health issues is that i struggle to clear copper and end up with toxic levels)
pre MC, i was always filtering water for drinking, as I learnt about toxins and heavy metals etc, I boil the water first and then filter the water for drinking
I now take my own filtered water everywhere (a water change can upset my stomach)
like most things in MC world - we cant do EVERYTHING perfectly, but there are lots of things we can do to minimise issues...

My town is ancient, it has history going back at least 1,000 years!
In those days an order of monks settled here because the water is very suitable for brewing beer. Remember, they all drank beer then and the monastery needed an income. We are still the Midlands home of brewing.

Drinking beer side-steps the lead plumbing problem, also.
