Also, I agree with Zizzle that overmethylation can be a real problem. I had to tweak my folate/b-12 until I got the dosages right. At first, I was definitely feeling the anxiety, hot flashes, etc. The folate seems to impact me way more than the b-12, in terms of overall methylation.

Hi Lucy,
There is methylfolate in the B-complex i tried. I am off of all enriched foods until I speak with my practitioner. I'm wondering if there is a way to test tissue b12 levels vs blood b12.

I know just enough about methylation to be dangerous but I have read that a test called MMA or methylmalonic acid is a way to measure for a functional b12 deficiency. If it is high then it means you are deficient in B12. Also, if homocysteine is high it can mean you are deficient in B12 and or folate. I've also read that high serum B12 can indicate MTHFR mutation and thus a probable b12 deficiency. And also I think the issue is not tissue b12 but whether or not your body is utilizing the b12 that's available. So just thinking it through, you have to test for some biochemical marker like MMA that shows if your body is using b12.

My serum b12 on a recent test was somewhat elevated. I have several snps related to methylation and am taking methyl b12 supplements. My homocysteine was normal at 6. An MMA test was not done. I haven't talked to my doctor about my test results yet but I suspect she will tell me that my elevated B12 is due to supplementing. I'll let you know what she says.

What I'm wondering about all that bad stuff you can find related to elevated b12 is there is never any specific level or range of b12 referenced. It could be that in the case of some underlying disease that causes serum b12 to elevate that the level might be wildly high. I'm just speculating here because I can't find any information on that. But all in all it has to be interpreted in the total clinical picture.
