ExaTest

Post by TM »

Barbie, Tex and everyone,

Much like EnteroLab testing, the ExaTest is processed at only one private lab in the US founded by the researcher (Dr. Burton B Silver, retired) who developed the test, and has published extensively about it. It was developed decades ago, and apparently is (or was) used by NASA on astronauts. I think his son might run the lab now.

The kit (saliva swab) has to be ordered, administered and returned by an MD, but they make it really easy for Dr.’s to order them (at no cost). My PCP readily agreed but advised me to do the test while supplementing as usual—which in 2014 was 1200 to1400 mg of mag. citrate, 10 MEQ of Rx potassium chloride, and 400 mg of calcium citrate daily. The test results were all within normal ranges, so I was told to continue at those levels but to switch to mag. glycinate. No other info was provided.

Unfortunately, those dosages had not been making much of a dent in my muscle cramps, headaches, etc. which is why I’d taken the test in the first place. So I learned nothing from it. Also, neither my PCP nor any of the (many) doctors I’ve seen since, have had a clue as to how to interpret the results. If anyone here has had the test or knows how to interpret the results, I’d love to actually understand it! In any event it’s covered in full by Medicare, and probably private insurers as well.

Thanks for posting that information.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
