Andrew,

I don't smoke but when I was in my early 20s I did - I remember many attempts to quit. On kept making a new attempt until I succeeded. I did not have MC at the time.

In the smoker's mind there are always good excuses why not to quit right now - that's part of being addicted to a substance. The brain simply comes up with the most elaborate and well thought out rationalizations as to why it would be better not to quit - perhaps later. That is the substance being active in you - the substance you are addicted to.

The non-addict knows that there is never a better time to quit than now. And you know that too. You just have to make up your mind about it and then let the non-addicted part of you win the battle. You must keep finding good arguments to support the theory that now is an excellent time to quit and then use those arguments against the addicted speculations that serve only one purpose, namely to keep you hooked. That's how you break a habit. It sounds simple and in many ways it is but you must want to do it and then dedicate yourself to the project.

Wow, now you see why my younger siblings think I moralize.............!! LOL!!

Love,
Karen

Andrew,

To find the ingredient list of any med, just "Google" the name of the med, and the word "ingredients", such as:

Entocort ingredients

If you want to see the side effects, for example, just "Google" the name of the med, and the words "side effects".

There are a lot of ifs, ands, or buts involved in the answer to your quesiton about the odds of an MC reaction to the cessation of smoking. Probably the biggest factor will be how well you hancle stress, together with the concurrent presence of any other stressful events in your life.

Andrew,

I wouldn't want to influence you either way. Of course quitting IS the best idea for various health reasons, and Karen is very correct in her statement "In the smoker's mind there are always good excuses why not to quit right now..." - I know, I'm a smoker.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Hugs
Peggy

Well I am hoping that after I am on the diet for about 6-9 months then I will attempt to quit smoking again. Most likely after next tax season is when that time frame will fall into. I just want to try and minimize any flare that I might get as a result from quitting smoking. However I am very encouraged about the many people who have seemed to overcome their symptoms and disease thru diet modification. I hope I am as lucky.

Just to add to our data: I quit smoking in 1992 and got MC in 2003. Can't imagine there is any relation between the two. Still don't smoke and generally no MC symptoms for over a year. I used the patch to quit and it was excellent--could never have done it on my own. Smoked for 30 years, so, as Celia mentioned, probably have innumerable bad results hiding in my body. Anyway, I would encourage you to quit when you feel ready. It is great to not be a slave to it, which I was!

Oma aka Herb Lady-

Were you dx'd with MC when you quit smoking? When you quit smoking what was your remission regimen (meds, gf diet, df diet)?

I am hoping that after doing a GFDF diet for about 6-9 months and then quitting I will have a better experience than just quitting w/o any adjustments to my diet.

I am really excited about this new diet that I am going to incorporate because I have felt so poorly for almost 2 years now and I am ready to feel like a normal person again. I miss waking up in the morning w/o that nagging stomach pain and nausea. I miss eating food and not having a civil war in my stomach and intestines. I miss getting 6-7 hours of sleep and wakin up NOT tired (now I get 8-10 hours every night and wake up exhausted... I wonder what I do in my sleep  ) I miss lifting weights and playing baseball... I am sure I will play softball now since I am getting older and there arent many adult baseball leagues. I just miss how life used to be and if I can regain even half of what life used to be I think I will be satisfied. Oh yeah I miss unassisted solid bowel movements and I miss the days without GAS

Thank you all for your valuable input and if anyone else would like to add I would love to hear from them.

Andrew,

If my experience is anything to go by, you're expectations for the diet are too LOW! I expect you to feel better than you did 5 years ago!!!

I'm seriously considering quitting smoking when I go back to work, which has been moved up to Monday. I think it would be a good time because my daily activities will change, hence many of the triggers. If that doesn't work, maybe I'll quit with you next year (Oh, that doesn't sound like I'm ready yet) LOL.

Love, Jean
