Hi,

We are connected to the internet via Cable - same company that offers Cable TV, it is Time Warner Cable and they call the High Speed Internet Road Runner. Well, we are always on, which is wonderful. And it is fast - kind of like just click and go service - you hardly ever have to wait for anything to happen. Unfortunately, Timer Warner Cable seems to have managed to get a monopoly on High Speed Internet Service in this town so there is no price competition. I think we pay $44.95 per month currently. My husband has decided to change everything to Vonage - this means that we get digital phone service, cable tv, and high speed internet all in one package. We are in the installment phase - don't know what the actual monthly bill will be for everything but it's going to be about the same as it was before except that we didn't have cable tv before.

Dial-up is very slow, isn't it Wayne. I wonder if Vonage would be available in your neck of the woods?

Love,
Karen

Hi Karen,

There are several companies in this area that sell HS internet service. The problem is that the only lines available are the old phone lines. No one has any HS cables available out here in the country, where I live. Sigh.

Darn! Is it possible to get HS service via a satelite dish? I bet not or you would have had it already. Sorry about that.

Well, yes it is possible. The problem is that it's expensive and not very fast, compared with cable. Also, reception can be poor during atmospheric disturbances. It's debatable whether the slight speed gain is worth the cost, and the risk of poor reception during certain contitions.

I need to look into that option again, to see if any one is offering an improved service these days, but if I understand it correctly, there's not much oppertunity for improving the speed of conventional satellite service, the way there is with cable service.

Love,
Wayne
