Silken Windhounds

Post by JLH »

They will someday be recognized by AKC. They are all DNA tested. They are NOT like Labradoodles and the like.

Of course, the downside to them getting into the AKC registry is that dark side of the AKC. Many good breeds have been ruined by breeders latching onto a new breed and turning them into to a puppy mill scenerio to crank them out ASAP just to make a buck. Very sad. There was some of that when the Jack Russell Terriers and Border Collies made it in. And that is the very reason that the Catahoula Leopard Dog people want nothing to do with the AKC.

Makes me glad that whippets are still pretty rare, and most breeders will only place a puppy with someone who already has a whippet, in order to keep the number of possible puppy mills down. But there are still puppy mills out there cranking out whippet babies, even one in my home state that we have not had any luck shutting down...major bummer for those poor dogs...

Hugs,
C

Most of the good breeders do home inspections and you have to sign a contract to surrender them to the breeder if you can't keep the dog for any reason.

That's what we do also, contracts are good, if the owners will not break them. I have known a few breeders that have given up on them, since legally, they are not binding acording to most courts. But I figure anything you can do to make sure your puppy doesn't end up God knows where, is better than nothing.

We are blessed in the fact that our dogs are sought after because of their bloodlines and titles, and since we breed so rarely, we can handpick homes of trusted friends for them to go to....no strangers have ever owned a Bunnygetter, and we hope to keep it that way.

Who was Tara out of? I used to course with quite a few of the Borzoi people in the midwest, wondered if I knew her kennel?

I've just been in touch with Bonnie Dalzell because Tara isn't in her extensive online Borzoi pedigree list.

Her sire was Ch. Keeper's Romance and dam was Cherry Knoll's Denise. Her name was Winding Hollow's Tara Blanca. Bonnie D. had no Winding Hollow dogs at all. I saw some dogs out of Cherry Knoll's Denise who were born on the same day........

The only Borzoi person we knew was Bonnie Nichols from the Columbus OH obedience club. I'm sure she didn't remember us when I called her about Silkens. (I'm certain I could hear her turning up her nose at the idea. LOL) She did tell me about a breeder, though.

Bonnie's kennel used to be outside of Delaware OH (DH's home town)and is now in Thompson Ohio, I think.

The Cherry Knoll's names sounds familiar, not sure if it was dogs we coursed against, showed against or could be from some dogs that I tested when I was an evaluator for Therapy Dogs International. Don't remember where I was them, but they were nicely bred dogs, with great temperments. Not that I have ever seen a Borzoi without a great temperment, they just don't make a sighthound without one, it's just in their DNA....

Don't hold it against Bonnie about turning her nose up about the Silkens, we sighthound breed people can be pretty snobby about our babies and cross breeding. It's like the Greyhound people freaking out about them breeding Lurchers by cross breeding greyhounds........After 21 years of work on improving my own breed, I would die if any of mine were cross bred, but to each their own preference. When you look at it, each dog breed came from a cross of something else when they started.

The breeder was Kathy R. Holtz if that helps at all.

Quite a few of the Borzoi people breed Silkens as well.

Bonnie Nichols has Nickolai for her Borzoi kennel name. I wish we had gone to see her dogs.

We saw 2 whippets and a greyhound the last time we were at PetSmart. (Same owners)

Holtz, remember the name, I think we coursed or showed against them in the KC area years ago possibly...

I guess the Borzoi people are more open minded than us whippet people...you can't get us to change for anything...

It amazes me how many whip people have greyhounds or IG's for their second breed. I did NGA greyhound rescue for about 15 years and placed a lot of dogs with whippet and IG families...in fact I have had 2 greyhounds myself, my hot shot obedience dog that was number 2 in the breed in obedience and went to Gaines was a NGA greyhound and I currently have his cousin, a retired 11 year old ex-junior showmanship dog and therapy dog.

Interesting.

My daughters went to KU. We lived in Omaha at the time.

Did you ever know any whippet people from Omaha? Kent and Marilyn Standiford are from there and have some very nice whip's. Their dog Bubba was a terrific coursing dog....

Do you know any Borzoi breeders from the Tulsa area? I think her name was Goddard....Deb maybe, very nice dogs. Used to go up against them at the matches when I was starting out my first whippet as a pup. There was also a guy that showed a Borzoi in obedience about 18 years ago in this area, can't recall his name, but the dog was so cute going over the high jump after it's dumbbell, he would pounce on the dumbbell then throw it into the air to catch it before jumping back over the jump. The crowds loved him....

No, we didn't really know any Borzoi people other than Bonnie Nichols. Tara was just a pet we took to obedience school in Columbus. I was busy with our two young daughters.

Is that a greyhound on the bed with Keaton? A friend in the sailing club has a retired greyhound named Monoply.

You'd like the woman we met in Birmingham to see our first Silkens, Miss Kitty and Maverick. (Miss Kitty was very small. I could hold her in my arms.) Maverick was a bit bigger. The vets in B'ham give free eye exams to therapy dogs and Jennifer met us there. She had a van full of sight hounds. There were Silkens, Salukis and our hands down favorite, Drumm, her Borzoi. She does Greyhound rescue.

The dog on the bed with Keaton is one of my other whippets, he is a 10 year old stud who is the Grandson of one of my orginal dogs....My greyhound is just now warming up to Keaton, at 11, Grandpa Greyhound isn't to sure yet about this wild puppy, but Keaton is winning him over....

Cool about the therapy dogs, I did TDI for many years, until my own disability made it to hard for me to do it. Now I just own the show dogs, my sister will handle them for me....which should be interesting at Keatons first shows, when my 100 lb Catahoula service dog goes to the show with him...Big sister Boo will make sure no one messes with him....

How many dogs do you own?

DH just complained about some down the street neighbors owning 8 dogs. He wanted to report them. I said we live outside of city limits.......

I have 6 at our ranch and 1 one lives in Boston that I co-own...The whippet club ( Keaton, my 16 blue brindle bitch from our first litter and a 10 year old red brindle stud from our second litter), a 11 year old greyhound and a 10 year old toy fox terrier ( a rescue that no one wanted, so she never left )

We are not your typical show people, no kennel here, the dogs are house dogs, that sleep in our room with us, usually a few even hogging the bed. They are very much our family.....
