Just thought of another question for you.....

I feel EXTREMELY hungry a LOT, and I'm pretty sure that's one of the symptoms, but not sure what it's a symptom OF. I thought it was a sign of low blood sugar, because your body wants you to eat to raise it, but a lot of times I get an overwhelming hunger right after I eat, and sometimes before I'm even done with my meal! It's the weirdest thing! I feel more hungry after I eat than I do 3 hours after I eat. I know it takes 20 minutes for our brains to register that we just gave our bodies food, but this is different. I actually get HUNGRIER right after I eat than I was before I started eating. Anyone else?

YUP! And I think the more sugary the food the more this happens. Or maybe its the other way around? I'll pay better attention now.

Sue and Katy,

In those prone to hypoglcemia, what you describe is exactly what happens. When you eat something sugary or starchy, a large bolus of insulin is immediately released into the blood. But it "overshoots"...........in other words - the blood sugar goes down too rapidly (more than it should) and there is still insulin available. The excess insulin results in signs of hypoglcemia - hunger for more sugary food and eventually weakness, jitteriness, a cold sweat, etc. You can help keep the blood sugar more stable (avoid extreme swings) if you eat protein along with sugar/starch.

Love,

Polly

Thanks, Polly .... I had a hunch it was something like that, but you explained it so simply and clearly that it makes perfect sense! As a matter of fact, I printed it out and folded it up... now am keeping it in my little case with my blood-testing gear. So many people ask me how and why things are happening to my body, and your explanation was the best!

So it's not just in my head that I'm feeling these symptoms WHILE I'm eating something sweet? I thought it was a bit crazy that I would feel it within minutes, but I think you're telling me I'm not ready for the padded room yet.
