Food is good! As long as it doesn't make people ill! which then means food is bad!

Writing about madness made me crazy.

Manga is Japanese cartoon strip things... if that makes sense!

Katy--

Yes, I'm quite familiar. We even have kids that dress like the characters--it's an obsession over here. I don't quite get it, but then again, I'm just an old punk rock nerd girl....er, woman.

Love,

Thanks Polly.

I'm not very good doing presentations, even ones that are 1:1 with tutors, so i'm proud of being able to stand and do one (even though I did go completley on an unrelated tangent at some point.

I think a tangent shows you're interested in your subject, and have other things to say. In a perverse way, I think the occasional random tangent shows a student to advantage. It doesn't look so good on professors, and it's the sort of thing they train out of professional presenters, but even if they raised an eyebrow, I bet your tangent showed you'd actually done some reading and thinking!

It's a tad self-serving of me to think this way. A friend once suggested I should have a radio program entitled 'Tangents' - he meant it nicely, but it does point out a certain habit (and all these years later, I never managed to get it trained out of me, apparently).

Congratulations on another milestone in your quest!

Katy--

Please clue us in--what counts as post-colonial? We don't have that category over here!

Just jumping in here to say "Go Katy, Go Katy"!! I'm exhausted just looking at your schedule but I have no doubt you'll get it all done. So far, so good!

I don't want to pull you away from your focus to enlighten us but I'm with Mags- when you figure out your ideas, fill us in. I have several friends who have decided to go back to school/university in their mid 40's and I'm envious so I'll just live vicariously through them and your posts.

I have no idea what these words mean either so i'm learning as i am teaching you all this!

Postcolonial- there are several debates as to when this begins...

1- The moment the coloniser lands on the land that the colonised resides in.
2- The moment the coloniser leaves the land that was colonised.
3- Somewhere in the middle!
4- The moment those who have been colonised begin to gain a voice through the language of those who colonised them (That is to say they write novels in, for example the English Language.)
5- The moment those who have been colonised reclaim their language to tell their own history.

Yes some of these overlap!

Since I last posted though I did get an idea for what i could do my project on (Just waiting for the ok) which is hopefully going to be: the representations of race and Otherness (I have no idea what this word means! well yet!) in Doctor Who!

Speaking of DR Who- this is the tangent I went on Sara in my American Lit presentation today, which doesnt really have that much in common with Gendered madness!

Oh, you are definitely getting top marks for that tangent! I think you could probably bring in gendered madness somewhere in that picture as well. That is just the sort of thing that must thrill them, even if they're pretending they're 'not familiar' with Dr. Who (as if!).

Well done!

Oh Boy!

Which incarnation of Dr. Who? Of the most recent, I must admit a particular fondness for David Tennant!

I have a fondness for Mr Tennant myself, I posses 5 posters, a cardboard cutout of him, and a sonic screwdriver!

Still waiting to get the OK back for this project, but it would be based on the 11th dr.

Whilst I wait for the ok on this one, I have moved onto working on my Colonial essay which is on race and gender.

Katy,

You are on a roll! Are you pulling all-nighters? Keep it up - is the end in sight yet?

Good luck tomorrow on the presentation. I'll bet you feel a great relief when that's over with.

Hugs,

Polly
