Jon,
Many communities are beginning to vote on eliminating water flouridation, in part for health concerns, and in part because of the expense to local water authorities. No one disputes that flouride exposure in the mouth (topical) helps harden teeth and enamel. The issue is with how much we are ingesting, not just from tap water, but from all processed food (soda, juice, soups, mechanically separated meats, etc), not to mention the amounts used as pesticides in produce such as grapes and others. It amounts to a dangerously high dose, especially for children. The CDC estimates that 25-30% of kids have dental flourosis now - something they call "cosmetic." But if that's what it can do to teeth, imagine what it does to skeletal bone on the way to the teeth? The brain? There is a link to osteosarcoma in boys. One big issue is babies using formula reconstituted with tap water when they have no teeth and are drinking nearly their body weight in water a day. When the Dept of Health and Human Services quietly lowered their recommended level of flouride in tap water recently (0.7ppm versus the old 1.2 ppm), they were also supposed to educate parents to use bottled, flouride-free water to make formula. Imagine telling low-income Americans they have to buy bottled water to make formula? And we still see bottled "nursery water" and waters for kids with added flouride. Makes me sick!!!!!!

Then there's the issue of the government medicating the entire population without our consent. I remember a few years ago doctors wanted to add statins to the water supply!!
