It would be poetic justice if he was coming down with the virus while being "interviewed" by government officials and exposed them! Hopefully they are sweating out whether they are going to get sick..........

I came across a paper form a highly respected journal, The Lancet. I thought I'd mention it here since it addresses some questions forum members have asked earlier in this thread.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanc ... 5/fulltext

The paper presents detailed information on the first 41 cases (on Jan 2nd).

68% of the patients had no underlying diseases. 32% had underling diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease.

As of January 22nd, 7 patients were still hospitalized, 28 patients had been discharged. 6 patients had died. an outcome ratio of 1 death for 5 recovered.

I'm sitting in a small regional airport right now. No one is masked but every one is seated a big distance away from each other. Usually everyone squashes together near the gate.

There are no face masks in stock in my town. I sent my boyfriend around to the drug stores and Home Depot and Lowes. Even the particle masks at the big box stores are sold out.

I can let you have a few if you want. I bought some before everybody sold out. Let me know if you want any.

This flu season, influenza is attributed to 3500 deaths per month in US, which is about the current rate of Covid19 mortality, 100/day.

Tex, what type of mask did you buy? My understanding is that your basic mask (that they may give you at the Dr's office if you come in with a fever/cough) isn't sufficient. Is that what you've heard?

You're right. Most cheap (common — such as surgical masks) masks will only keep out dust, liquids, vapors, particles of whatever, etc., with varying degrees of efficiency. They may be virus resistant (to some extent), but only more complex masks are able to keep out viruses. And of course they're not 100 % effective, either. They can all help (because they all can keep out most particles), but none can offer a 100 % guarantee that they can absolutely prevent an infection due to a virus. A problem all masks have is fit — they can have air leaks because getting a perfect seal on the face is pretty tough to do. The bottom line is that unless you're going to seek an expensive, custom design, you generally will have to settle for partial protection. Anything is better than nothing, and most are good enough that when applied properly, they're reasonably effective. I would prefer a surgical mask over a dust mask, though, because of the liquid particles issue.

At least, that's the way I look at the issue, from an engineer's viewpoint.

I did also read, Tex, that the act of having any mask on helps people remember to keep their hands away from their face.... so it's good for something!

That might be a mask's most beneficial feature.

I'm taking 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily. If I start to have suspicious symptoms. If your vitamin D level is below 50 ng/ml, it might be very helpful to get it up in the 60–80 range, or at least over 50 ng/ml

Wow, that is a huge increase in dosage!! I did read the link you posted and, I surmise since it's only for a week, it's safe, but that's a lot of Vit D!

Hi Karen,

That's not a preventive or maintenance dose, that's a therapeutic or treatment dose. I would take it only if I was pretty sure that I was already infected with the flu. Yes it's safe, if used according to those rules.
