John,

That lump in your throat may be due to the hiatal hernia. If the upper part of the stomach is pulled through the diaphragm, it causes a sensation of a lump in the throat. One of the old home remedies that other members here swear by, is to drink a glass of warm water, and then jump up and down, and during the impact of landing, the weight of the water will usually pull the errant section of the stomach back into place, and relieve the symptoms.
