Kari, was it very expensive? I so want to get rid of this awful fungus.

Sharaine, my nails are extremely strong, but they are now super dry, and ridged.
I think my fungus started when my ex-DIL took us all for pedis. I will never have a mani/pedi again without my own tools, including a basin.

I have the ridges too and have noticed my nails have become more brittle, however I am still able to grow them quite long. It makes it more annoying though, when they do break off.

Interesting comment about the low back and deep hip pain being related to gluten. I have that too and thought the back pain may be due my previous work in construction and the bad hips inherited from my mother. I've been GF/DF again for about a month and I'm not noticing any improvements worth mentioning- sigh.

Lesley,

I was doing research on the internet and came across an add for fungus laser treatment at the expense of $200 for 10 nails. I contacted them for an appointment and asked if they would reduce the price since I only needed 4 toe nails and one finger nail treated. I ended up paying $100.

The place I went to specializes in vein treatment, and the technician said that so many of their patients had problems with nail fungus that they decided to start treating that as well. She said that places that specialize in fungus treatment charge much higher fees.

It will take some time to know if the treatment was successful - I'll make sure to let you all know how it goes.

Love,
Kari

That's very reasonable. Please do keep me in the loop. I want to know if it works. I would LOVE to get rid of this.

Thanks Kari

Add me to the very soft, ridged, easily-broken nails list. If I bump into something lightly at the wrong angle the nail will split sideways. I've had this trouble all my life. Not one doctor has had an inkling why this keeps happening. The thumbs are especially bad. Oh, yes, I have a fungus on three toes on both feet.

Yes to ridges (since I was a little kid), brittleness, and I have gone through some Really bad spells where they have flaked off in layers from the tip of the nail horizontally, sheeting off towards the nail bed. Luckily, haven't had that problem lately, nor any fungus issues.

The dermatologists always said ridges and pitting are related to eczema. I'm starting to think a lot of eczema is related to auto-immune disorders.

I also have brittle nails that easily chip.

I get toenail fungus if I paint my toenails. If I don't use nail polish, the toenail fungus goes away.

I never paint my toenails. I probably should to hide them; maybe the reverse would happen to me and I'd lose the fungus.

I'll add my .02 cents to this fungal conversation :-)

You should put foot powder on your foot and in your shoes and socks if you don't want to contaminate yourself all over again.

Are we all waiting for some sort of pic from the Tex-man?

Monique,

At first I wondered what in the world you were talking about, and then it dawned on me that you were referring to some comparison photos of my hands, mentioned earlier in the thread. Those were posted in another thread, here. You have to click on each photo to open an enlargement, in order to see any detail.

My .02 cents.....The linear lines on the nails and nails that curve under can relate to hypertension per my PCP and gal at the nail salon.....My nails had finally stopped curving under and became very strong while I was drinking a ton of whole milk.....since that may be out of the question, I probably need Vit D. I'm on a beta blocker but, based on new study, I will probably need my PCP to add another med for the hypertension but will stay on the beta blocker for the great results I'm having in controlling my D.

Hope everyone is doing well!!!

I don't have hypertension but do have one fingernail - the right long nail - that curves under.

Going back to 2011, did the nail fungus treatment with the laser work? If so, I'll do it.

Still have a breaking right thumb nail with the pronounced ridges. I must be in dire need a manicure and a pedicure; never had one!

Sorry to report that the laser treatment only worked very marginally for me. However, I just went back for a second treatment, as they say that the success rate is much higher the second time around :xfingers: . I can only hope.

Ant - if you read this post, I'm curious if you're having success with your treatment protocol, as I remember you posting about it not to long ago?

Love,
Kari

P.S. I will post about how it goes with this second treatment, but I'm sure it will take quite a while before I see any results.

My search for information on fingernails brought up this post. I am now having problems with my fingernails which used to be long and lovely. I am losing weight too which I think is more my new, healthy diet than D. A lady at work asked if I used weight watchers online! LOL!
It's been good to read this post and see that I am not alone. The information about vitamin B was useful. Thank you all!
