Tex, what kind of magnesium was it you suggested tablet wise (no corn)? I just covered my legs with mag lotion, plus the oil this morning. I use mom deodorant too. I thought it would help too! May not be enough. I will go to the drugstore, for b12 too. Still awaiting my b12 numbers.

Thank you thank you!!!

I use Doctor's Best 100% Chelated Magnesium (magnesium glycinate), unbuffered. The buffered chelated magnesium products usually use magnesium oxide as the buffering agent, and magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed. Magnesium oxcide also causes D.

For some reason or other, some of us have a major problem absorbing enough magnesium. Now that I'm taking more magnesium, my allergy symptoms have declined significantly.

You're most welcome,

Going to have to order. Is there a particular sublingual b12 that's best?

Thank you Tex, just ordered.

My legs and arms have finally woke up, along with my gut. The prednisone must be out of my system.

When it rains it pours.....went to allergy dr today. My skin test showed mild allergy to soy and moderate allergy to shrimp. I had a blood test as well because allergy tests are only 90% accurate (i believe that was the percentage). If this is true, this goes to show how scary the food industry really is.

I've had 3 events, and in none of them I knew I ate shrimp or soy (even though I've eaten both all my life :eat: ). This really puts a big wrench in things. I'm holding onto the hope that as soon as my colitis is in remission, my vitamins are up, a miracle will happen, and the allergies will vanish!!

One question, can one "overdo" magnesium? My grandmother's dr told her that yesterday when we tried to see if she could add that into her existing medications.

I discontinued my d3 this weekend because it had fish oil in it. I bought another with lanolin in it, haven't tried yet. Right now I am avoiding a lot to see what these allergies really are, but don't want to get too low in d3. Is there a d3 like the mag oil? It seems like someone posted that on here, maybe I'm wrong.

Oh the brighter side, so glad these allergies happened after I'm already avoiding most things or I would have cried like a baby. (shrimp/seafood was my passion) Another is my gut is doing pretty well considering the life changing news today and I have even added canned green beans and carrots to my menu!

Martha,

Yes, it's possible to overdo magnesium, especially if the kidneys are not functioning up to par, because it's their job to purge any excess amounts in the blood. Too much magnesium can cause symptoms very similar to a magnesium deficiency. I'm not sure if the same risk applies to topically-applied magnesium, but it might — I simply don't know.

I'm not familiar with topical D3, but hopefully someone who knows about it will respond.

Tex

P. S. Bummer on the allergy test results.

So, speaking of magnesium, how much should we try to get a day? I am using the spray only in the mornings now, and taking the Doctor's Best chelated magnesium tablets at night (I was taking 2 - I believe that's 400 mg) and I take a little bit in the morning with my 1 calcium tablet that I take (it's altogether) and I think it's maybe 100 mg. So, I'm getting about 500 mg a day plus the morning sprays on my legs. Is that enough for our disease before we are fully healed?

Hi Jari,

Unless you need to recover from a serious magnesium deficiency, that should be plenty. My ability to absorb magnesium is compromised (because of missing body parts), but after l took significantly more for for a few months in order to resolve my deficiency, I've settled down to about 400–500 mg per day.

Read the back label on that magnesium. You will find that with virtually all magnesium, the amount listed is "per dose" and the labeled "dose" is 2 tablets. The Doctor's Best Chelated Magnesium I have shows 200 mg per dose, but the dose (listed at the top of the label, as I recall) is 2 tablets. That means that each tablet contains 100 mg of magnesium glycinate.

Almost everyone takes half as much magnesium as they believe they are taking because of that misleading labeling convention. I did the same thing for years, and that's one of the reasons why I ended up with a magnesium deficiency. I thought I was taking 400 mg (a full RDA), but I was actually only taking 200 mg.

in line with Tex's statement, important to double check what 'Elemental Magnesium' intake you are getting, by reading the small print on the back of the label.

The RDA is about 400-500mg ELEMENTAL magnesium per day
as we have learnt in MC world, everyone can be a bit different...

Quite a few medications will deplete magnesium -
http://www.jigsawhealth.com/blog/drug-m ... -magnesium

Calcium and phosphate can reduce magnesium absorption
Iron and Manganese reduce absorption

if you have been deficient, it is good to higher dosage of Elemental Magnesium for 8 weeks or so 600mg -800mg per day

Factors that increase demand of Magnesium;
bowel resection, chronic fatigue, coffee excess, diarrhoea, diabetes, emotional stress, high fat and sugar intake, noisy environments, radiation, renal dysfunction, soft tissue calcification,

Thanks guys, my thoughts on overdoing were topically I guess. My grandmother isn't taking mag supplements only the lotion.

I'm now trying to decipher wether I'm having an "allergy to the food" or "histamine overload". I tried a banana this week on Thursday fine. Yesterday, itching all over. I'm a little paranoid on this allergic reaction thing. Of course antihistamines cause D for me. I can take dimenhydrinate with no effects. I guess I'll start taking it daily.

I've not incorporated supplements back in cause waiting on allergy blood work to compare to skin test.

I'm hoping to get into an integrative doctor to send me to a nutrionist soon. I'm hoping they will look into any vitamin deficiencies.

I'm trying to keep my chin up as this seems to get more complicated everyday.....

I hope everyone is having a healthy new year so far! I haven't been on here for a few weeks. I am battling a cold virus that swept through our area....

Just wanted to update and ask a few questions. My family and I went to Disneyworld over the holidays. All went well with my safe eating (even though 2 million people were there with us😬). I took safe snacks into the park and only ate my food at the room. I did get a little hungry, but gut did well. I even took a vegan protein shake with hemp milk that really helped and was well tolerated (thanks Gabes, got that from your posts). My first question is do protein shakes increase your chances of having kidney stones? I hope that's an obsurd question, my cousin and uncle swears that's what caused theirs. They get them often and compare kidney stones to dying, lol.

Regarding my reflux, it went away after 3 weeks of no antihistamines, pepcid, or occasional pepto. When I got back, I came down with this virus (histamines galore, nausea, gas, cramping constantly even with no food). Took 1 meclizine for 2 days, reflux a day later 👎. Would L-methionine help? I may just have to wait this cold out without any med. I was doing so good with my MC too!

My last question is about sublingual b12. I bought some the other day to try. It is highly concentrated. It contains all the bs, riboflavin and some others. What concentration should one be taking if using sublingual? That concentration makes me a little nervous....

Thank you guys for all your opinions!!

I apologize for somehow overlooking that post back in November. What time of day did you eat the banana? FWIW, it takes roughly half a day or slightly longer before I notice itching if I eat a banana that happens to have a higher histamine content than I can tolerate. I normally eat a frozen banana (with almond or cashew butter) as a mid-morning snack. When I take a shower at night, the itching will show up, because a hot shower tends to magnify histamine reactions for many/most of us.

I'll bet a GF cookie that your cousin and uncle are magnesium deficient (and possibly vitamin D deficient). The only time in my life that I had problems (plural) with kidney stones was when I was magnesium deficient. If you have plenty of magnesium and vitamin D in circulation, they will get the calcium out of your bloodstream and into your bones, so that it's not available to precipitate out in your kidneys as kidney stones. And in case your cousin and uncle argue against this, yes, published medical research does exist to verify that magnesium deficiency promotes the formation of kidney stones.
Chronic hypomagnesaemia

Diagnosis of chronic hypomagnesaemia is difficult as there may be only a slightly negative magnesium balance over time. There is equilibrium among certain tissue pools, and serum concentration is balanced by magnesium from bone. Thus, there are individuals with a serum magnesium concentration within the reference interval who have a total body deficit for magnesium. Magnesium levels in serum and 24-h urine samples may be normal, and so parenteral administration of magnesium with assessment of retention should be considered if in doubt [7]. Chronic latent magnesium deficiency has been linked to atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, hypertension (see also Geiger and Wanner [37] in this supplement.), malignant tumours, kidney stones, alteration in blood lipids, premenstrual syndrome and psychiatric disorders.
http://ckj.oxfordjournals.org/content/5 ... full#sec-8

Regarding treating colds or other viruses, there is some evidence that one way to fight a virus (including the flu) is with massive doses of vitamin D3. Unless your 25(OH)D3 level is already above the so-called "normal" range, you can safely take 50,000 IU per day for about 5 days, to see if that helps.

Regarding B-12, I've been taking 2,000 mcg (2 mg) of methylcobalamin daily for over 6 years (as part of Metanx).

Now for the bad news, and I apologize for making your decisions even more complex, but I would be derelict in my duties if I didn't mention that dimenhydrinate is one of the antihistamines that also has anticholinergic effects. And as you may be aware, recently published research concludes that the use of anticholinergic medications increase the risk of the development of Alzheimer's and other forms of age-related dementia, after the total (lifetime) number of doses exceeds a certain threshold number. I'm just guessing at the number here, but if I recall correctly, the number of uses is slightly less than 200 (but I could be way off with that number).

It's great to see that your reflux problem and MC symptoms are much improved.

You're most welcome,
Tex

Thank you Tex, I'm staying away from bananas for now. Maybe I could buy them greenish yellow and freeze immediately. Histamines are still my biggest issue, I dread spring.

I thought I'd read that on here about the kidney stones and d3 and mag deficiency. I really like that protein shake, it reminds me of a vanilla milkshake, lol. I love drinking it. I will redirect my uncle and cousin.

I will increase my d3 definitely! As far as the b12, I knew it was micrograms, but then saw it was 33,000% our daily need so that's what got me. I guess I shouldn't have said concentrated. Its just a lot more than what's in multi-vitamin. I will try it.

Oh dear about the Alzheimer's! I remember reading that too. My grandmother had it. Somedays, I worry about myself, I can't remember short term. My mom blames it on my 3 kids and my taxi service, lol........

I'll just deal with histamines currently and increase d3. I do so much better gut wise avoiding all otc meds. Couple of months ago I couldn't tolerate hemp milk, so yay for me. Its a slow process, but I'm getting there.
