i might fire all my doctors and start over

Post by kat123456 »

Hi everyone,
First of all, thanks for being such a great source of support! I want to tell you that I am feeling much better these days, thanks to several factors, primarily Paleo Diet, DGL, fish oil, and the entocort (which I am tapering off of).

However, I am very bothered by a couple of encounters with my doctors lately. My "new" gastro basically read me the riot act for going to see the top celiac specialist in the world (who has been my doctor for 5 yrs now, but I only see him once a year). When I first met this new gastro, he knew that I have been a patient of this other 'famous' doc and was excited by the possibility of consulting with him. Now he wants nothing to do with him, because the famous doctor suggested that I taper off the prednisone and entocort and try antibiotics and other stuff instead. (Apparently, there is some new research that shows that LC responds really well to a specific antibiotic, which is why I probably always felt so good on Levaquin and Cirpo!). The local gastro also demanded to know if I would be seeing this other doctor again and if he will be 'taking over' my case entirely. I do not understand why these guys cannot work together. Anyway, I called the new gastro's office (which is also my GP's office) to get copies of my records to see another specialist in NYC and they are CHARGING ME for the records and they gave me a really hard time about asking for them at all; usually, doctors provide them free of charge to see another doc, but they refused. IN the past, all of my doctors have always given me a copy of any test results to keep in my file, as well, but this office does not do that. The secretary there is a totally nasty woman. (This is the woman who refused to give me an appt when I got so sick after my colonoscopy in May; I ended up in the hospital for 9 hours that night because of severe dehydration from the diarrhea. She actually told me there was a THREE WEEK WAIT to see anyone and wouldn't even let me talk to the doctors!!!!)

So, I am taking matters into my own hands and seeing another really great doc in NY City on Wednesday and hoping he can get a handle on all the auto-immune stuff that's been wreaking havoc for the past couple of years. I guess I will then need to change my GP, since she is in the same office as that new gastro who was so nasty (and who refused to give me an appt when I was very ill). I am just so sick of not being able to find a decent doctor anymore. Where have they all gone!? Or is it just that they don't want to deal with the tough cases like mine, where you have several auto-immune diseases acting up at once? My GP has a physician's assistant that sees most of her patients when you call for a sudden appt, but that woman is just clueless and can only handle the simplest of things.

Thoughts? How do I go about interviewing new docs without scaring them off about all of my medical conditions, or do I just handle this thru the top people in NYC only and if I need something immediate, just go to a walk-in clinic and see someone I don't know?

Hi Kat,

Why don't you call Enterolab and see if they have some recommendations of docs in your area who are up to snuff on MC/multiple intolerances/importance of diet? Perhaps Dr. Fine knows of someone who would be good for you.

Love,

Polly

Hi Kat,

I can see how professional pride might be affecting your "new" GI docs attitude, but unless you are dissatisfied with your original Celiac doc's performance, it's logical that you wouldn't feel the need to terminate that relationship, just because the "new" doc feels insecure, because of the arrangement. That office really seems to have a "nasty" attitude, don't they?

Polly's suggestion appears to be a great idea, and that could save a lot of search time. It's a shame that you will need to change to a new GP, also, but you will surely need one, to take care of the little things, and to facilitate seeing specialists, etc.

Hopefully, Enterolab will be able to provide you with a long list of doctors in the area who aren't afraid to take on a patient with multiple autoimmune issues.

Good luck,

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
