Hi Carrie,

Just saw what I would imagine was MOST of an interview done here in town with David McCollough on our local (the oldest educational tv station in the USA, I might add..ah hem) PBS station.

Did you know that he's got 17 grandchildren? Wow, what lucky grandkids! When asked if he'd ever written any history stuff for children, he said "no, but I talk to them all the time." That's when he mentioned all the grandchildren.

When Charlie Rose interviewed him did he get into his views about how teachers should be trained?

I can't believe the lack of knowledge students today have of history, particularly their own country's history. I've heard some pretty shocking answers on some of the game shows on tv, particularly ones like Millionaire.

The celebrities are the worst, for the most part, when they've had special nights for them. Don't know why people flock around em -- they bore me to death! Ha! Guess ignorance is in, big time!

Mr. McCollough's looking older, but pretty healthy, and certainly bright and alert, so hopefully, he's got many years left to write and publish on some interesting topics. I think he's enjoyed the Revolutionary period the most, don't you? Perhaps he'll write a third book as a companion to Adams and '76. That would be my fav as well.

I'm seriously considering sending 1776 to close friends for their birthdays.

Btw, just read your summation of all that had happened to you prior to joining this board. So glad you found this group if it's been helpful to you. I know I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you.

Yours, Luce

Hi Luce. So Houston had the first PBS television station. I'd have guessed NYC or Boston! But that's northeast arrogance for you - we think everything started here with the possible exception of Adam and Eve.

I had to put my reading of 1776 on the back burner as our grandchildren - ages 5, 7 ands 9 - are coming on Monday for a week's visit. They live in Canada and don't get here very often. I've been battening down the hatches and lining up fun things to do. (David is a good grandpa but after all he is a man of his generation; I willl keep a bottle of Scotch handy in case he needs sedation!).

The McCullough interview I mentioned earlier was a replay from May 30th. I don't recall him talkng about how they train teachers. I do know that here in NY all teachers must have masters degrees. Now while that may be admirable I doubt the good folks who taught me my ABC's and 123's had advanced degrees. And they did just fine and at a fraction of the $90,000 that most elementary teachers now earn in this state.

Back to 1776. I think it would be a great birthday gift to give, Luce. Although I'd hoped to be further along by now, I will get back to it after the grandkids leave (assuming I am still lucid!).

Love, Carrie

Carrie,

You mentioned teachers having master's degrees. McCcullough thinks it would be a good idea for teachers to have that level of education, only he believes that the advanced degree should be in their field -- biology, history, literature, etc., rather than in education itself.

This was in conjunction with his view that teachers should love what they teach as it is contagious. He says there are just too many teachers "teaching" things they don't even like themselves. This, too, is contagious. This is a simple idea, but somehow, I'd never really thought about it before listening to his comments in that interview.

Welp, good luck with the grandkids' visit. Now, what would ya do with 17 of em all at one time? Oh, I know, you could tell them about history! Ha!

Talk to ya when you've recovered.

Hi Oma,

Yep, those were a hoot! My father used to get the biggest kick out of "Are You Being Served."
