Researchers Suddenly Decide That Vitamin D May Help Crohn's

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Researchers have finally discovered that vitamin D my be beneficial for patients with Crohn's disease, and it may be helpful for preventing the disease from developing in the first place.

I have Vitamin D deficiency and upped my dose to 6000 last week. But did MC (and malabsorbition) contribute to my low Vit D or did low Vit D contribute to MC?

Good question, and this is just my opinion, but I believe that both possibilities probably apply. Many of us may have been more vulnerable to developing MC in the first place, because we were were low on vitamin D, (as I recall, my most obvious symptoms began after mid-winter, when my serum vitamin D levels would have been relatively low), and once the MC progresses to the point where we have a malabsorption issue, then surely this drastically reduces our ability to absorb supplemental vitamin D, (provided that we are taking a supplement). At least that's the way I see it.

Incidentally, thinking back, (as best I can recall), my symptoms let up a little as summer approached, and then the following winter, they got much worse, until somewhere along in March, the D started and wouldn't stop, and that was the point at which I caved in and tried to get medical help, (silly me).

ironic that vit D will help but when we are in flare we are stuck inside in the bathroom.....

maybe we should install skylights in our toilets!

Tex,

You bring up an interesting point. My symptoms also blossomed in late winter (February). Wondering if others have a similar experience? I know I was low but don't know how low. After I got sick I made sure to get sun and upped vitamin D and got myself up to 39.9, 6 months after symptoms started.

For those that don't know their levels, Direct Labs is having a special this month. $39
Patients can order their own test online, and Labcorp draws the blood for no extra charge...
